Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Massive third quarter leads WolfPack to road victory over Cascades

QUICK FIRE
  • A 22-0 run in the third quarter sent the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team to their first victory over the UFV Cascades in ten years in a commanding 60-50 victory Saturday night in Abbotsford.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Olena Vasylenko and Morgan Eichenberger were key in the victory for the WolfPack. Vasylenko, a product of Ukraine, scored a game-high 15 points while also adding nine assists and six steals. Eichenberger recorded her fourth double-double of the season, a mark that has her second in the conference, with 14 points and 18 rebounds while also recording five steals. Kylee Koppes (nine points), Sydney Vollrath (eight), Micah Ramsay (eight) and Hailey Merrigan (six) rounded out the scoring for TRU.
  • Both Fania Taylor and Julia Tuchscherer had 15 points to lead the Cascades.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Fraser Valley jumped out to a 14-9 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, the WolfPack responded in the second. Ramsay, a rookie from Kelowna, had eight points including a three-pointer right at the end of the half to keep the 'Pack just three points behind the Cascades at 28-25 heading into the halftime break.
  • The WolfPack absolutely dominated the third quarter, outscoring Fraser Valley 24-4 in the frame. The WolfPack held the Cascades scoreless over the final 7:38 of the quarter while coming to life offensively with a 22-0 run.  Eichenberger scored ten points in the quarter with Merrigan adding six and Vollrath five as TRU took the lead at 35-32 off a Merrigan three-pointer and ran their advantage all the way to 49-32 by the time the dust had settled in the third.
  • While the Cascades did their best to get back into the game in the fourth, clutch buckets down the stretch from Vasylenko, Vollrath and Koppes and a study WolfPack defensive effort saw the 'Pack pick up the 60-50 victory.

NOTABLE
  • The teams entered the weekend tied in the standings and the result will ensure they remain tied at 4-7 thanks to a weekend split.
  • With one more game still to play in the first half of the year, TRU has already earned their most conference wins in a season since 2019-20.
  • The victory was TRU's first over UFV since 2015, bringing an end to a 24-game streak.
  • Eichenberger's 18 rebounds ties for the second-most in a single game in program history. She already had a game that tied for the most in program history earlier in the season when the second-year forward pulled down 19 in a contest against MacEwan.
  • Vasylenko's nine assists are the sixth-most in a single game in program history.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will play their final game of 2025 this coming Friday when they welcome the UNBC Timberwolves to the TCC in a game that gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
