Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack complete sweep of Bisons, set program record for first semester success

QUICK FIRE
  • It's a sweep completed for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team that will head into the winter break at the top of the conference standings after they took down the Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-15) inside the TCC Saturday evening.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Once again it was an incredibly balanced att for the 'Pack. Keira Gent led the way with 13 kills. Maria Dancheva added 11 on just 15 attacks. Rida Erlalelitepe had nine kills and a trio of aces while Hail Ward put down eight kills and Myah Cressy six. Libby Meldrum's 42 assists were just one shy of top ten in the Canada West record books in a three set affair.
  • Eve Catojo and Raya Surinx both had six kills for the Bisons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack carried their success from last night over into the first set. Gent, Ward and Dancheva all had three kills while Erlalelitepe served up three aces and Ward two. The WolfPack dominated from beginning to end, holding Manitoba to just four kills in the frame. TRU ended the first scoring seven of set's final eight points with a pair of aces from Erlalelitepe leading the way.
  • Manitoba rallied to keep the second set close before TRU pulled away late. With the WolfPack leading 17-14, TRU went on a monster 8-2 run highlighted by a pair of kills each from Dancheva and Erlalelitepe to take the set 25-16. Dancheva led the way with six kills in the set.
  •  TRU put the game away in the third. Gent had eight of the WolfPack's 20 kills and the TRU defence held Manitoba to just eight as a team to send the WolfPack to the 25-15 win.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm)
  • I thought we passed the ball extremely well. We were in system for most of the night and got enough service pressure to keep them out of system.
  • We have enough weapons to keep teams off balance if we are passing the ball well and we can block and defend at a high level when we have the other team off the net – both those things came to fruition today and it made for a good night for us.
  • ON THE PROGRAM RECORD 10 WINS IN FIRST SEMESTER "It starts with the team buying in. They do the right things, they are working hard and pushing each other in practice, they're good teammates.
  • They don't want to have the same feeling that we were left with at the end of last year, so I think that's been a good motivator and then we have the personnel as well. It's not only the girls that you see on the floor on a nightly basis but everyone does their jobs no matter how big or small those are, the girls pushing in practice, doing the right things off the court that aren't always seen. I think all those things are helping us be successful.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 10-2 on the season, the first time in program history that the 'Pack have captured ten wins before the winter break. They sit at the top of Canada West standings.
  • The win was TRU's sixth-straight victory.
  • The WolfPack entered the weekend ranked 10th in the nation while Manitoba was ranked 8th.
  • This is the first time Manitoba, the defending national champions, has lost a weekend 3-0, 3-0 since 2019.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will now head into the winter break as one of the top teams in the country. The WolfPack will be back in action Jan. 9-10 when they travel to Langley to face the TWU Spartans.
