Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack fall to No. 1 ranked T-Birds

QUICK FIRE
  • They rallied in the second set but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team couldn't find a way to upset the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-14) loss Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Daniel Hitchens led the way offensively for the WolfPack with eight kills and a trio of blocks. Jakob Leinemann had three kills on six swings as well as a pair of blocks. Libero Brandon Johnson was strong throughout the night with 11 digs.
  • Gavin Moes, Alex Emery and Dawson Pratt paced the T-Birds offence with seven, five and five kills respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Five aces from the Thunderbirds in the first set allowed the visitors to pull away from the 'Pack en route to the 25-11 victory.
  • TRU played their best volleyball of the night in the second. Both Hitchens and Alex Howard had three kills in the frame as the 'Pack hung right with the Thunderbirds. A kill from Hitchen made the score just 15-14 in favour of the Thunderbirds in the middle portion of the set. That was as close as TRU would come however as the T-Birds were able to pull away late for the 25-19 victory.
  • The WolfPack couldn't keep that pressure on as UBC went on to take the third set 25-14 and claim the 3-0 victory.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly)
  • We did everything we weren't supposed to do. We were tentative, really stagnant on defence and not going after it on the service line. We were playing a veteran, No. 1 team in the country and credit to UBC, they had a game plan and executed, they stayed very controlled and we never responded.
  • We had a slight push in the second set but the errors that we are making is because we are tentative before the play starts and you can't play Canada West volleyball with that mentality.
  • I thought Brandon Johnson was excellent, defensively that was the best night he's had so far so the one bright note is that if we can get him playing like that all the time that's going to help our team.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack and Thunderbirds will do battle again tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 8, in a game that's slated to get underway at 4:45 p.m. inside the TCC.
