Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Eichenberger’s big night sends WolfPack to weekend sweep

QUICK FIRE
  • On the back of a massive effort from Kamloops local Morgan Eichenberger the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team earned a second consecutive victory with a 57-49 win over the MacEwan Griffins.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Eichenberger went 10-14 from the floor to score 21 points while also pulling down a program record-tying 19 rebounds. Olena Vasylenko had her best night so far offensively with the 'Pack as she tallied 17 points and had six steals.
  • Sofia Makinen led the Griffins with 11 points while Samantha Hickey had nine points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack came out firing in the first frame. Eichenberger went a perfect 5-5 from the floor en route to 11 points as the 'Pack jumped out to a quick 19-9 lead after the opening ten minutes of play.
  • MacEwan flipped the script in the second. The hosts outscored TRU 18-4 in the frame to turn what was a 10-point WolfPack lead into a 27-23 Griffins edge at the halftime break.
  • The WolfPack managed to cut into that Griffins lead in the third. Vasylenko knocked down a pair of three-pointers to lead the way with nine of TRU's 18 points in the frame. Kylee Koppes restored TRU's lead in the final minute of the quarter but the Griffins responded to hold a slim 42-41 edge heading into the fourth.
  • Eight points from Eichenberger in the final frame helped the 'Pack pull out the victory. A quick 9-2 run to start the frame that featured six points from Eichenberger gave the 'Pack a 50-44 lead they wouldn't surrender. Hailey Merrigan knocked in a clutch three-pointer late to put the game to bed as TRU went on to claim the 57-49 win.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack associate head coach Joe Davis)
  • Happy for the team. By no means was it a perfect game out there, but hopefully there were some lessons learned on how things go for you when you are able to execute the game plan.
  • We managed to win the battle on the glass which is something that we spend a lot of time talking about. We are getting better with our attention to detail.
  • ON THE PLAY OF MORGAN EICHENBERGER "She is live out there on the court and has worked on her game a lot. She never missed a training session over the summer and has improved a lot. I'm happy for her that she had a productive day out there, she does a lot of things for us and she's only going to continue to grow."
  • After the game the team was quick to give Paige Leahy a lot of credit. She got an extended run there in the fourth quarter and was able to do her job and help the team.

NOTABLE
  • Eichenberger's 19 rebounds ties the program single-game record. Only U SPORTS All-Canadian Diane Schuetze had previously reached that mark for TRU.
  • This is TRU's first weekend sweep since 2023 and second since 2019.
  • TRU moves to 2-3 on the year and are currently fifth in the Canada West Pacific Division.
  • The WolfPack grabbed 42 rebounds to MacEwan's 27.

UP NEXT
  • After five games on the road to start their season the WolfPack will finally get the chance to play on home court next weekend when they host the TWU Spartans inside the TCC on Nov. 14-15.
