Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Strong battle for WolfPack against No. 1 ranked UBC

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team put together a much better effort than the night previous as they held their own against the nationally No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) loss Saturday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • For the second night in a row it was rookie Daniel Hitchens pacing the WolfPack offence with eight kills. Alex Howard added six kills while Walker Sodaro directed the attack with 23 assists and a pair of blocks.
  • Dawson Pratt had a game-high 12 kills for UBC followed closely by Reeve Gingera with 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both Howard and Jordan Fulljames tallied three kills to lead the 'Pack in what was a close first set. A kill from Hitchens gave TRU a two-point edge at 18-16 but a veteran T-Birds squad immediately embarked upon a 6-0 run to give them a 22-18 lead. Lincoln Wagner and Fulljames had kills down the stretch but the 'Pack couldn't close the deficit en route to a close 25-21 defeat.
  • The score was tied 12 times in the second set as the WolfPack once again hung tough with UBC. A strong serving run from Owen McParland saw the 'Pack score three-straight points to take a 12-9 advantage. Again, the Thunderbirds found a response as they tied the match up at 20-20 and then scored the next five straight points to take it 25-20.
  • Trailing 20-14 in the third set, the WolfPack refused to go away. A 6-2 WolfPack run that featured two kills from McParland as well as a block from Lincoln Wagner and Walker Sodaro brought TRU right back into it trailing 22-20. That was as close as the 'Pack could come however as UBC went on to take the third 25-20.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly)
  • We were absolutely better tonight. I thought our service game was better, our passing was better, we got a little spark from Jordan Fulljames brining some offence, so definitely better.
  • Unfortunately, we just seemed to stall out in the first and second set in what we call the redzone – 18-20 points – we had some unforced errors and guys were kind of looking around for someone else to step up. For sure it's a step forward which was nice to see, we had some really nice fight at the end of the third set but we still have to handle our side of the net. The unforced error stuff is hard to recover from.
  • I am proud of the way the guys fought tonight, it was a better effort all around and we are looking forward to a little bit of a break coming up with our bye weekend.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack now head into a well-deserved bye weekend. Their next Canada West action will be Nov. 21-22 when they head to Kelowna to face the UBC Okanagan Heat.
