Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Vollrath's career night leads WolfPack in wire-to-wire win over UNBC

QUICK FIRE
  • A career night from third-year guard Sydney Vollrath led the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team to a commanding 74-50 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves in a contest that they never trailed in.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • It was a night to remember for Vollrath who scored 28 points in the win including going 7-9 from three-point range. Morgan Eichenberger dropped a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Olena Vasylenko had five points and eight assists.
  • Claire Huang led the way for UNBC in the loss with 16 points. Viktoriia Filatova added 10 for the Twolves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A ferocious defensive effort and clean offence led the WolfPack to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter of play. The game started perfectly for the 'Pack with Vollrath banking home a three, she would go on to add nine more in the quarter, shooting 3/3 from deep. Vasylenko distributed the ball extremely well, tallying five assists in the opening stanza. Eichenberger added six points, all coming in the paint. UNBC made only three shots from the floor with TRU holding them to 3-14 shooting.
  • Vollrath continued her hot start in the second quarter draining another three from downtown, setting a new career-high with 21 points with two quarters left to play. UNBC couldn't close the gap in the second as TRU led 39-27 at the halftime break.
  • Vollrath couldn't be cooled off, adding another six to her career night in the third. Hailey Merrigan added five in the quarter, and TRU ended the frame with a buzzer-beater three-pointer from Maddy Hackman. The WolfPack increased their lead to 25 points heading into the final frame.
  • From there the 'Pack were able to see out the remainder of the game to earn the 74-50 victory.

NOTABLE
  • Vollrath entered rare air in the TRU record books with her performance. The 28 points ties her for fourth-most in program history. The record is held by Diane Schuetze with 31 back in 2012. Vollrath's seven three pointers fell one back of Jen Ju's eight for the program record.
  • TRU finishes the unofficial first half the season at 5-7, the first time the program has won five games before the winter break since 2019-20.
  • The 24-point win was TRU's largest margin of victory since an 87-61 victory over UBCO in 2018.
  • With another double-double tonight Eichenberger leads the conference with five so far this season.

QUOTABLE (Third-year guard Syndey Vollrath)
  • We really stuck to the scheme tonight, we executed the plan offensively and defensively. I think our fast break offence and ball pressure defence really led the way.
  • ON HER PLAY TONIGHT It feels good, but it feels good when everyone is hitting. I had really good positive self-talk had my hands ready and my teammates were able to find me with great passes.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have wrapped up the first half of their schedule and will return to action on January 9, 2026 when they welcome the UBCO Heat to the TCC in a game that gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
