Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack push No. 5 TBirds the distance in Vancouver

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 5 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver Saturday but came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 26-28, 15-9) scoreline.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday did a little bit of everything for TRU, finishing with 19 kills as well as a pair of aces to go with a pair of solo blocks. Rylan Ibbetson added 12 kills while Tyson Koops recorded 29 assists and four block assists.
  • Gavin Moes was the spearhead for a balanced TBird attack with 17 kills with Owen Lam (13 kills), Alex Emery (12), Dawson Pratt (12) and Kieran Robinson (10) all hitting double digits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC took a close first set. Flowerday had five kills while both Ibbetson and Goetz added three but the 'Pack fell behind 12-7 and early and were never quite able to recover.
  • The WolfPack bounced back in the second. TRU hit .227 per cent as a team while holding UBC to a mark of .062 per cent. The WolfPack owned the middle of frame, bouncing back from a 10-5 deficit all the way to a 15-12 lead punctuated by a kill from Mason Sodaro. From there the WolfPack were able to cruise to the comfortable 25-19 victory.
  • After UBC responded to win the third, TRU took a marathon fourth frame. Flowerday had five kills and Ibbetson four to lead the way for the 'Pack. A block from Gavin Margerison and Koop gave TRU their first set point at 24-22. After UBC fought both of those off, it was their turn to take set point at 25-24. The WolfPack refused to go away however and an ace from Margerison combined with a Flowerday kill down the stretch allowed the visitors to push the game to a fifth set.
  • UBC jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the fifth and final frame. The WolfPack did their best to fight back and cut the gap to just 11-8 thanks to a huge block and crafty kill from Ibbetson but that was as close as the visitors would come as UBC held on for victory.
NOTABLE
  • The WolfPack are now 4-12 on the season as they continue to battle for a playoff spot in a tight Canada West postseason race.
  • TRU came incredibly close to their third victory over an opponent ranked in the top five in Canada in as many weeks.

UP NEXT
  • After two-straight weekends on the road, the 'Pack will return to the friendly confines of the TCC this coming weekend as they welcome the Mount Royal Cougars to Kamloops Feb. 7-8.
