Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

WolfPack season comes to an end with loss to Bobcats

QUICK FIRE
  • They went out swinging but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team was unable to earn a must-win victory in a 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-15) loss to the Brandon Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the TCC.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • As they have all season, Sam Flowerday, Rylan Ibbetson and Matthew Hamilton keyed the 'Pack attack with 14, 13 and 10 kills respectively. Middles Jakob Leinemann and Mason Sodaro both added six kills.
  • Liam Pauls and Riley Grusing were efficient for the Bobcats with 13 kills apiece. Riley Brunet was a force at the net for one solo block and nine block assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU controlled the first set. The WolfPack attack was on fire with Flowerday tallying six kills, Ibbetson five and Mason Sodaro a perfect 4-4 to lead the way. TRU blew what was a close set in the middle of the frame wide open late. Leading 15-14, TRU embarked upon a 5-0 run thanks to strong serving from Walker Sodaro to jump out to a 20-14 edge. From there TRU was able to close out the set and take it 25-19.
  • Brandon came up clutch late to take the second. After the teams traded points all the way to 18-18, the visitors took control. A 6-1 run that featured a pair of Grusing kills and a Brunet block gave the visitors a commanding 24-19 edge. TRU fought off a trio of set points before Pauls ended the frame with a kill to make the score 25-22. Grusing powered the Bobcats attack with five kills in the set.
  • Brandon's defence at the net took over the third set as the visitors put up five blocks to TRU's one. A 4-0 Bobcats run that took the score from 11-11 to a 15-11 lead for Brandon was key in the frame. TRU did their best to close the gap but were unable to get it back within two the rest of the way as the Bobcats took it 25-19.
  • From there Brandon was able to see out the match, taking the fourth set in convincing fashion 25-16 to secure the match.

NOTABLE
  • The result sees TRU end their regular season with a record of 6-14 where they will finish just outside of the Canada West playoff picture.

UP NEXT
  • The loss brings an end to the season for a WolfPack team that went on a torrid run in the second semester to be playing competitive games right until the end of the season.
