Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

T-Birds take game one over WolfPack

QUICK FIRE
  • The host UBC Thunderbirds were too much for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team to handle as the hosts took the first game of the best-of-three Canada West Quarter-final series 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-14) in Vancouver.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Brooklyn Olfert tallied a team-high eight kills for TRU. Keira Gent added six kills and three digs while Maria Dancheva recorded both a solo and assisted block.
  • Akash Grewal hit .500 per cent on the night to rack up a game-high 14 kills while also firing in a pair of service aces. Lucy Borowski added 12 kills and eight digs for a Thunderbirds team that fired in seven aces in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC jumped out to an early lead on the night, going on a 10-2 run to start the match. Kills from Dancheva, Rida Erlalelitepe, Gent, Olfert and Faith Christensen down the stretch kept TRU within striking distance but the 'Pack were unable to close the gap en route to the 25-15 defeat.
  • TRU started the second much stronger. Gent and Erlalelitepe provided the scoring punch as the 'Pack held an early 4-3 advantage. A massive solo block courtesy of Dancheva saw TRU trailing just 8-7 at the midway point of the set before UBC ripped off an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead they wouldn't surrender en route to the set victory.
  • Back-to-back big plays from Christensen kept TRU in range of the T-Birds in the third. The fourth-year middle combined with Olfert for a block before heading to the service line and putting down an ace to make the score just 8-5 in favour of UBC. After the T-Birds stretched that lead to 19-10, TRU scored three of the next four points thanks to a pair of Olfert kills and a Erlalelitepe ace but that was as close as the 'Pack would come in the 25-14 defeat.

NOTABLE
  • The result puts the pressure on TRU who now must win tomorrow to extend the best-of-three quarter-final series.
  • The WolfPack entered the postseason as the five seed while the Thunderbirds are seeded fourth.
  • TRU is making their second-consecutive appearance in the CW postseason and their sixth in the last nine seasons.
  • UBC are the two-time defending U SPORTS National Champions

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "Obviously we didn't handle the environment very well. We know what to expect in regards to the fact that they're going to serve the ball tough and we couldn't deal with that first ball situation on our side."
  • "I don't think we acquitted ourselves very well, so the only choice is to be better tomorrow. The good news is we know that we can be a lot better than that, so that's the expectation."
  • "We have to put this one in the rear-view mirror – hopefully learn a couple things and get ready to go tomorrow."

UP NEXT
  • TRU will get a shot to send the series to a third and final game when they face UBC again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. in Vancouver.
