CALGARY – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack curling teams made their presence felt on the conference stage this past weekend as the women finished second and the men third at the CW Curling Championships.
Returning to Canada West play for the first time since 2016, the women's rink of Holly Hafeli, Natalie Hafeli, Jorja Kopytko and Hannah O'Neil finished the weekend with a record of 4-2. Qualifiing for the championship match with a 5-4 victory over the Regina Cougars, the 'Pack were unable to double-up on wins over the Cougars as they lost 6-0 in the final.
The result is TRU's second-ever second place finish at the Canada West level.
Also back in action for the first time in a decade, the WolfPack men's team of Calder Fadden, Coburn Fadden, Duncan Silversides and Kyron Suhan were the talk of the tournament with their third place finish.
Starting their weekend by knocking off the five-time reigning champion in the Alberta Golden Bears with a two-spot in the eighth end for the 5-4 win, TRU handed Alberta their first loss at the CW Championship since the conference started hosting the tournament in 2019.
The WolfPack followed that up by going perfect in pool play before eventually losing a tight 6-4 match with the reigning U SPORTS champion Regina Cougars in the seminfinals.
With their second place result the TRU women now qualify for the U SPORTS National Championship tournament taking place in Lethbridge, AB Feb. 24-28.
Holly Hafeli, Natalie Hafeli, Jorja Kopytko and Hannah O'Neill were all named second team all-stars for their efforts.
