Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack, Sydney Sanghara

Everything comes up aces for WolfPack in three set victory

QUICK FIRE
  • Both teams were on fire from the service line but it was the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team that came out on top in a dominant 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14) victory over the MRU Cougars inside the TCC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Brooklyn Olfert had a game-high 13 kills while making just a single attacking error as the outside hitter hit .522 per cent in the match. Maria Dancheva had a well-rounded game with eight kills, five digs, two block assists and two aces. Rida Erlalelitepe added eight digs, seven kills and an astounding team-high four serving aces. Kate Lamothe maintained her reputation as "Ace Lamothe" with a beautiful trio of aces to go along with her four kills and three block assists.
  • Emma Boyd and Bronwynn Davies-Neira led the scoring for the Cougars with six kills apiece. Boyd also added a pair of aces and a pair of digs to the scoresheet for MRU. Davies-Neira had a game-high nine digs and her three kills in a row in the second set kept the Cougars in the game. Sydney Scatcherd had a whopping game-high five aces to go along with seven digs and four kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack came out quick in the first set with a 4-0 run to set the tone of the match early. The 'Pack went on another 7-0 run later in the set to take a commanding 16-6 edge. Scatcherd hit back-to-back aces to extend the set, but there was too big of a deficit for MRU to overcome and Erlaliletepe sealed off the first set will a big kill at 25-15.
  • The second set started out on theme with an ace from Mount Royal's Grace Coulter. From there the set went point-for-point until a trio of kills from Davies-Neira gave the Cougars the lead at 7-4. TRU fired back to take the lead 18-12 in the second set with their run punctuated by a solo block from Faith Christensen. A trio of aces from Scatcherd brought the Cougars back into the game. However, it was not enough as TRU continued their dominant offensive effort with Lamothe hitting a set-point ace for the 'Pack to take the second set 25-20.
  • The third set saw the Cougars come out with some renewed energy to begin the frame with a 3-0 run, accentuated by back-to-back aces from Emma Boyd. After another ace from Mount Royal, courtesy of Lexi Herrod, the Cougars earned an early 5-1 edge. After a quick timeout TRU came back to go on a 5-0 run and take the lead, accentuated by an ace from Lamothe. The rest of the third set saw three aces from Erlalelitepe, including two back-to-back, before Dancheva put the finishing touches on the game with an ace to give TRU the straight-set victory.
NOTABLE
  • The result was key in the Canada West standings as TRU moves into a tie with the Cougars for fifth-place in the conference.
  • The two teams combined for 21 aces on the night with the Cougars firing in 11 and TRU 10.
  • The WolfPack broke their mini four-game losing streak with the impressive performance on home court.
  • Erlalelitepe's four aces sets a new career-high for the outside hitter from Turkey.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "Generally we played fairly clean. We could have been better in reception, they serve tough and we knew that but we also got some points from the service line."
  • "Our offence was clean, we hit a good percentage, our block defence was disciplined so weren't giving them alot of free points."
  • "Overall it was a better performance."
  • "Sport is a funny thing and sometimes a couple things go wrong and the sky is falling. We know that we know how to play volleyball and we hadn't shown that as much as we would have liked."
  • "It was nice for the girls to go out there and more than anything just prove to themselves that they are doing the right things and if they stick with the process that we will be fine."
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will take on the Mount Royal Cougars again tomorrow, Saturday February 8 at 4:45pm in the Tournament Capital Centre.
