Heroic effort as season comes to an end for ‘Pack

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team went out swinging Saturday night. Knowing that it was the final game of their 2024-25 season, a young WolfPack squad put together one of their best efforts as a group, pushing the UVic Vikes to overtime before eventually falling 80-78.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

For one final time graduating guard Danijela Kovacevic was the fulcrum of the WolfPack attack. The product of Serbia was 8-16 from the floor for a team-high 24 points in the game. Sydney Vollrath exploded offensively for TRU, knocking down four three-pointers en route to 19 points. Kate De La Mare nearly added a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Abigail Becker was the difference for UVic. Becker finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Both Jade Dittmer (15 points) and Karis de Paiva (10 points) also hit double digits for the hosts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

TRU held the lead after the opening ten minutes of play. De La Mare led the way with five points in the frame and knocked down a three-pointer with just 15 seconds to give the 'Pack a 15-13 advantage.
The second quarter belonged to Vollrath. The second-year guard was electric for TRU, going a perfect 4-4 from long range to score 17 points as the 'Pack jumped out to a 42-27 lead at the halftime break.
Jaya Saroya scored five points in the third with Kylee Koppes adding four as the 'Pack continued to lead by ten heading into the final quarter with the score 58-48.
UVic started the fourth on a 20-7 run to not only erase the WolfPack lead but also snag a 68-65 edge of their own. Kovacevic answered with four points down the stretch for the 'Pack and a Vollrath layup with 33 seconds left gave TRU the lead with the score at 71-70. Victory just eluded TRU however as a UVic free-throw tied the game and sent the teams to overtime.
Kovacevic had all seven of TRU's points in overtime as the team came so close to victory. Trailing 80-78 with eight seconds left, the WolfPack executed an inbound play to perfection but the resulting shot just barely missed falling into the hoop as the Vikes escaped with the victory.
