Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack strike first but fall to Timberwolves in first action of 2025

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team came out on the wrong side of a hard-fought battle Friday night, falling 2-1 to the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Abdel Coulibaly, last season's leading scorer for TRU, picked right back up where he left off by scoring the goal for the 'Pack. Amir Ghasemi recorded the assist in his first-ever game for TRU with Luca Ortu making a pair of saves.
  • Koss Nystedt and Jamie Wildash-Chan scored for UNBC while Logan Pierce made five stops.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU struck early. Just seven minutes into the game Ghasemi forced a turnover before sending a pass over to Coulibaly who unleashed a shot that overpowered Pierce to find the back of the net.
  • The WolfPack kept up the pressure and came close to doubling their lead multiple times but a combination of timely stops by Pierce and some unlucky bounces kept the score 1-0.
  • UNBC struck twice in quick succession right before the halftime break. After Nystedt tallied the equalizer in the 43rd minute, Wildash-Chan gave UNBC the lead with an acrobatic finish right before the halftime whistle.
  • The WolfPack dominated play for much of the second half, putting nine shots towards goal in search of the tying mark.
  • TRU's best two chances in the frame came back-to-back ten minutes into the second half. Lachlan Will fired in a shot that beat Pierce only for a desperation stop from a UNBC defender cleared the ball off the goalline. TRU nearly struck again off the ensuing corner kick but again a shot that got past Pierce was cleared by a defender at the very last second.
  • The 'Pack continued to throw wave after wave of attack towards the Timberwolves net throughout the rest of the match but were unable to final the all-important equalizing goal.

NOTABLE
  • Five players, four in the starting lineup, made their WolfPack debuts in the game.
  • TRU outshot UNBC 19-10 in the game.
  • Coulibaly now has four goals in his WolfPack career.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "I thought our guys played really well and battled hard. We probably could have been up two or three goals in the first half before having a little bit of a letdown at the end."
  • "We battled back in the second half and overall I was really happy with the effort from the guys. Now we have to turn around and get ready to go for Sunday."
  • "All the guys making their debuts acquitted themselves well in their first game."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack and Timberwolves will be back in action this Sunday in a game that gets underway at 2:30 p.m. in Prince George.
