Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Timberwolves edge ‘Pack in close contest

QUICK FIRE
  • In a game that was tight throughout, it was the host UNBC Timberwolves that came out on the right side of the final scoreline as they handed the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team a 2-1 defeat Sunday afternoon.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Lachlan Will scored his first of the season for the 'Pack with rookie Ryan Prasad earning the assist.
  • Wyatt Lyon and Jamie Wildash-Chan responded for UNBC. Lyon also recorded an assist for the two-point day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While the WolfPack outshot UNBC 5-3 in the first half, the two teams went into the halftime break all even at 0-0.
  • Amir Ghasemi came close to opening the scoring 30 minutes into the game. After sustained WolfPack pressure resulted in a WolfPack free kick 25 yards away from goal, Ghasemi stepped up and curled a ball over the defensive wall that appeared destined for the top corner only to be stopped by Logan Pierce in the UNBC net.
  • The whole game changed during the first ten minutes of the second half. After Lyon opened the scoring with a strike from in-tight in the 48th minute of play, Wildash-Chan gave the hosts a commanding 2-0 edge in the 55th minute with a long-range effort that bounced off the crossbar and in.
  • TRU immediately took back control of the game and managed to respond in the 59th minute.
  • Rookie Ryan Prasad, who had just recently entered the game as a substitute, gathered a ball 30 yards away from the UNBC net and stepped around his defender before chipping a pass into the path of Will. Will made no mistake to bury the ball into the back of the net.
  • The WolfPack managed six more shots on net down the stretch but were unable to beat Pierce en route to the close defeat.

NOTABLE
  • The goal was Will's first for the WolfPack after missing much of the latter portion of last season due to injury.
  • TRU outshot UNBC 10-8 in the game.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "The first half I thought we were really good, defensively solid and created scoring opportunities but just didn't finish."
  • "We came out in the second and for the first ten minutes for whatever reason the guys came out flat and that was the difference in the game. We let in two poor goals
  • "We started to get our game back after that but by that point it was too late. UNBC is sound defensively and hard to break down. I thought we still created chances but we have to find a way to score. We are young but we need some leadership to calm things down when things start to go a little sideways."
  • "Game one was two minutes at the end of the first half and today was ten minutes at the start of the second so really it was 15 minutes over the course of two games where we had letdowns. Good teams that have good players are going to punish you when you do that, so we have to figure out how to play smart for 90 minutes."
  • "The guys are going to be disappointed right now but we'll give them the day off tomorrow and then it's right back to work on Tuesday. It's the good thing about our schedule, is that you are right back at it again."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will return to Kamloops for their first games of the season inside of Hillside Stadium next weekend. TRU will play host to the defending National Champion UBC Thunderbirds at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and the UVic Vikes at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
