Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack deserve better result in close loss to Vikes

QUICK FIRE
  • They struck first and controlled the game for much of the night but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team couldn't pick up their first win of the season in a close 2-1 defeat at the hands of the UVic Vikes Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Abdel Coulibaly unleashed a wonder-strike for his second goal of the season with Sam Barazandeh picking up his first-ever WolfPack point with the assist. In his first start for TRU, Toran Rutherford made five saves for the 'Pack.
  • Fin Tugwell was instrumental for the visitors as he scored both of the UVic goals. Callum Weir made a trio of saves to record the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU earned the first real scoring chance for either team 26 minutes in when Coulibaly flicked a header from a long ball forward off the foot of Rutherford into the path of Kang. Kang controlled the ball deep in the Vikes' penalty box but Weir did well to stop his left footed strike.
  • With the pressure mounting throughout the first half, TRU were finally rewarded just seconds before the halftime whistle. From a throw-in deep in the UVic end, Barazandeh palced the ball at the feet of Coulibaly who twisted around a Vikes' defender and unleashed a rocket of a left-footed strike perfectly into the top corner of the net.
  • A pair of set-piece goals in the second half sunk the WolfPack's chance of victory.
  • The Vikes tied the match off a free-kick in the 65th minute of play when Ole Cameron perfectly backheeled a ball into the box to Tugwell who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
  • While the 'Pack had multiple chances down the stretch, UVic took a lead they wouldn't surrender in the 71st minute of play.
  • Another free-kick, this time just between the WolfPack's 18-yard box and the sideline, was sent in by Aiden Grew. The ball bounced around TRU's penalty area off multiple players before falling to Tugwell who sent it past a helpless Rutherford for his second of the night.
  • Multiple corner kicks and two shots on net in the remainder of the game for TRU all went for nought as UVic was able to escape with the victory.

NOTABLE
  • Both Rutherford (5 saves) and Barazandeh (1 assist) were making their first-ever starts for TRU.
  • Coulibaly's goal was the fifth of his WolfPack career.
  • TRU is now 0-4 on the season.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will hit the road next weekend as they head to the Lower Mainland to face the UFV Cascades (Friday, Sept. 5) and the TWU Spartans (Saturday, Sept. 6). Those games can be watched live on Canadawest.tv.
