Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack make it three home wins in a row with dominant performance

QUICK FIRE
  • A commanding effort for the complete 90 minutes saw the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team roll to a dominant 5-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday afternoon.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Two WolfPack goals in the first half set the tone for TRU.
  • A great team movement led to TRU's first goal. Off a TRU throw-in deep in the Timberwolves end, Katie Chun sent a through ball into the path of Branby and the second-year midfielder from Kelowna was able to cut it back to a wide-open Lalonde who made no mistake to score her second of the year.
  • A rocket from Virgo doubled the TRU lead five minutes before the halftime whistle. The fourth-year defender from Ottawa, ON unleashed a blazing shot from 25 yards out that overpowered Rathke.
  • The game was never in doubt the rest of the way as the WolfPack dominated both possession of the ball and goalscoring chances.
  •  A goal from Ford in the 65th was sandwiched by a pair of Lufo markers as TRU ran away with the victory.

NOTABLE
  • With two goals in the game Lufo moves to seven on the season. That mark ties her for both the Canada West lead as well as the WolfPack single season program record.
  • The win moves TRU to 5-3 on the season where they hold sole possession of second place in the Pacific Division with 15 points.
  • The shutout for Floor Ursem ties her for the program's single season record with four. Ursem has four shutouts in her first eight starts for TRU.
  • The win was TRU's third-straight at home, the first time that the program has accomplished that feat in Canada West play.
  • Ford's goal was the first for the rookie from Calgary.
  • TRU outshot UNBC 17-0 in the game.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington)

  • "I think they executed the plan that we talked about. We had a very specific pressing plan and it worked. Credit to UNBC they are a really good team in possession but we were happy with the way we compacted spaces and created a whole bunch of chances. It's nice to put the ball into the net."
  • "We knew we were going to get them at their best so we had to be focused and I'm happy with how our players approached the game. Everybody stepped up and put in a shift. We are really happy, it was a good day at the office for everybody."
  • ON CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THROUGHOUT THE LINEUP "It's always difficult, we had a couple players that didn't get in which is tough but everybody that came in contributed. Ford scored her first WolfPack goal so I'm proud of her, Lalonde got another goal as a rookie. Happy that we are getting goals and assists from different places. It's also another shutout for Floor which is a big positive and something we've been working on a lot is making sure we don't concede goals."
  • "We are happy where we are but we have some really big games coming up, so we'll start to get ready for those."

UP NEXT
  • TRU will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games in the Lower Mainland when they face the TWU Spartans and UFV Cascades on Friday and Saturday night respectively.
