Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack double-up Cascades for home victory

QUICK FIRE
  • A pair of goals in the second half sent the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the UFV Cascades inside Hillside Stadium Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Kat Stewart and Mackenzie Lalonde scored the goals for TRU, with Stewart also tallying an assist on Lalonde's goal. Alexis Virgo also had an assist for the 'Pack. Floor Ursem made a pair of saves for her third shutout of the season.
  • Addy Chen made two saves for Fraser Valley while Kiana Langston was a threatening presence throughout the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half solved nothing as the 'Pack and Cascades played to a stalemate.
  • UFV almost opened the scoring 20 minutes into the game. Eesha Mudaliar fed a ball to Langston and the third-year forward was able to turn and unleash a blast towards net only for Ursem to come up big with a diving stop.
  • TRU's best chance to score came in the 31st minute when Esi Lufo found Lalonde all alone in the 18-yard box, but the rookie from Ottawa wasn't able to direct her effort past a sprawling Chen.
  • The WolfPack dominated play in the second half.
  • TRU sent seven shots towards net and were rewarded for their effort with two important goals.
  • The first marker came less than ten minutes into the second frame. Alexis Virgo sent a long ball into the box from a free-kick, Chen came to claim it but the ball fell near Stewart who - with her back to the goal - managed to score from a acrobatic effort that was fired over her left shoulder and into the net.
  • That lead was doubled just three minutes later.
  • A TRU corner kick bounced around the Cascades' penalty area before carroming out to a waiting Stewart on the edge of the UFV 18-yard box. The third-year TRU forward sent a rocket towards goal that Lalonde swept past a helpless Chen.
  • UFV did their best to claw their way back into the match but relentless WolfPack pressure limited the Cascades to just one shot towards goal down the stretch.

NOTABLE
  • Ursem's third shutout, just five games into the season, already puts the Dutch netminder second in program history for shutouts in a Canada West season.
  • Lalonde's goal was the first of her TRU career.
  • TRU outshot UFV 14-5 in the game.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington)

  • "I thought we did some really good things throughout the whole game. At halftime I didn't quite think we had hit our stride and we talked about how we had another couple gears to hit."
  • "We targeted set pieces today as a good opportunity for us and barring some luck we could have had a few more."
  • "We were good value for the win so obviously I'm really happy. Lalonde getting her first goal was great."
  • "In the second half we got at them a bit more and forced them to commit fouls or put the ball out of play which gave us the opportunity to put some balls into the box. When you have athletes that can go and get on the end of stuff it's great. Kat Stewart showed some unbelievable athleticism and Lalonde was in the right spot to sweep it home."
  • "UFV is always difficult to play against and this was an important game for us to come away with the win, so we'll take the three points on the board, dust ourselves off and get ready for a fight with Trinity Western tomorrow."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back in action tomorrow night, Saturday Sept. 6, at 5:30 p.m. when they welcome the TWU Spartans to Kamloops. UFV will remain on the road for a game against the UBCO Heat in Kelowna tomorrow.
