Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Second half surge sees WolfPack flip the script to defeat Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • Just one night after falling by a large margin a resilient Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team battled all the way back to split the weekend and earn a 53-45 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat, Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sharpshooter Sydney Vollrath led the way offensively for the 'Pack, going 8-8 from the charity stripe en route to a game-high 17 points. Olena Vasylenko added 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Hailey Merrigan was all over the glass with a career-high 14 rebounds while Morgan Eichenberger added nine points and eight rebounds.
  • Stef Hart was the leading scorer for the Heat with 13 points while Kanani Coon and Tennyson McCarthy both added 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eager to bounce back after last night's defeat, the WolfPack were dominant to start the game. TRU compiled an 11-2 run through the opening five minutes of the match with five points from Vollrath leading the way. UBCO battled back late but the 'Pack held the Heat to shooting just 15.3 per cent from the floor in the opening frame to hold a 13-7 edge after the first.
  • The Heat battled back in the second, outscoring TRU 16-5 in the frame to take a five-point lead into the halftime break. Vollrath continued to lead the way for TRU with four points in the quarter.
  • TRU's offence came to life at the end of the third. With UBCO leading 30-20 halfway through the frame, the 'Pack exploded for 17 points the rest of the way while holding the Heat to just five. Vasylenko, Eichenberger, Kylee Koppes, Micah Ramsay and Merrigan all had buckets during the run that sent the hosts into the final quarter leading 37-35.
  • The WolfPack kept that momentum rolling into the final frame, scoring the first 11 points of the quarter to lead 48-35 with five minutes left to play. The Heat cut that lead to as little as three points late in the game, but a Vasylenko three in the final minute put the game away for TRU.

NOTABLE
  • The win for TRU put an end to UBCO's ten game winning streak over the 'Pack.
  • Merrigan's 14 rebounds were a new career-high for the first-year forward from Australia.
  • A strong defensive effort from the 'Pack limited UBCO to shooting just 26 per cent from the floor as a team.
  • The win improves TRU's record to 6-8 on the season. Their six wins has them tied with both UFV and Victoria for fourth place in the division although both those teams hold a game in hand.
  • The result sees TRU and UBCO end the 2025-26 version of the Presidents' Cup (an annual competition between the two schools in their head-to-head matches in soccer, basketball and volleyball) tied with a record of 3-3-1. The Heat will take the trophy back to Kelowna on the points-for tie breaker.

UP NEXT
  • Next up for the WolfPack will be their final home games of the season. The 'Pack will take on the UFV Cascades in a rare Thursday night match on Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. before facing the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
