Cold shooting night hurts WolfPack in loss to Cascades

QUICK FIRE
  • Morgan Eichenberger led the way offensively, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team couldn't keep pace with the visiting UFV Cascades in a 54-40 loss inside the TCC Thursday night.
     
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Eichenberger was the story for TRU on the night, finishing with 17 points while going 8-12 from the floor. The second-year forward from Kamloops also pulled down 11 rebounds and had a pair of blocks. Olena Vasylenko provided the secondary scoring for TRU with seven points and four assists.
  • Julia Tuchscherer, the reigning Canada West Women's Basketball Player of the Week, was all over the stat sheet for UFV with 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Bernie Leda added 12 points for the Cascades while Kyanna Knodel had nine points and 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eichenberger was lights out to start the night, going a perfect 5-5 from the floor in the first quarter en route to scoring 10 of TRU's 15 points. The WolfPack hung with the Cascades early, trailing just 21-15 after the first frame.
  • UFV began to pull away in the second. The WolfPack shot just 13 per cent from the floor as a team in the quarter and the Cascades ended the half on a 7-0 run to take a 15-point lead into the break.
  • While Kylee Koppes and Vasylenko scored early for TRU in the third, the Cascades continued to increase their lead. Miah Schuurman had six points in the quarter as the visitors led 49-30 after three.
  • Olivia Wheatley had four points in the fourth as TRU outscored UFV 10-5 in the frame, but it was too little too late as the Cascades held on for the 54-40 victory.
 
NOTABLE
  • The result was an important one in the Canada West standings. The WolfPack fell to a record of 6-9 with the loss while UFV jumped to 7-7.
  • Eichenberger's 17 points is the second-most she's scored in a game this season.
  • With 17 points and 11 rebounds in the game Eichenberger recorded her sixth double-double of the season, the most in of any player in the conference.
