Third quarter surge leads TBirds over WolfPack on Senior Night

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men's basketball team was unable to overcome a strong third quarter from the UBC Thunderbirds, dropping their final home game of the season 85-72.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jayden Stephens dropped a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Steve Stinson added 17 points and five steals. Thomas Olsen found double-digits with 10 in what was the final home game of his TRU career.
  • Five UBC players where in double figures, led by Tobi Akinkunmi and Nikola Guzina with 14 apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A long-range barrage welcomed fans to the contest with both teams combining for nine made three pointers in the first quarter as UBC led 24-23 after 10 minutes. Jayden Stephens led the way with 12 points and three rebounds. Steve Stinson hit a pair of threes for six points. Tobi Akinkunmi had 10 points in the quarter for UBC, all 10 came in the opening three and a half minutes. 
  • The pendulum swung back towards the 'Pack in the second quarter, with the one point lead switching sides on the scoreboard, TRU leading 40-39 at the recess. Stephens continued his strong start with six more in the second, entering the break with 18 points and seven rebounds. Olsen got involved all over the floor on his senior night with four points, four rebounds, and two assists after 20 minutes. UBC used a balanced scoring approach with nine different players finding the bottom of the net. 
  • UBC utilized a 18-4 run to end the third quarter to pull away from the 'Pack. The Thunderbirds shot 50 per cent from deep in the quarter to stretch the lead. Stinson and Jaeden Bynoe both had six in the quarter for TRU but it was UBC ahead 69-56 after three. 
  • TRU would manage to get back within eight points in the final frame but that's as close as they would come, falling 85-72.
 
NOTABLE
  • TRU is now 10-6, good for third in the Canada West Pacific Division
  • Prior to the game the WolfPack celebrated graduating players Thomas Olsen and Gavin Reis, two young men that played five outstanding seasons with the 'Pack and who will both graduate this Spring with an honours degree – Olsen in Chemical Biology and Reis in Geography and Environmental Studies.
 

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have wrapped up their home calendar, set to play the final four games of the regular season on the road. Next Thursday TRU takes on Trinity Western in Langley, before heading to the Island for a Saturday matchup with the UVIC Vikes.
