Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack lead early before fading in loss to Spartans

QUICK FIRE
  •  They led for much of the first quarter but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team couldn't keep pace with the TWU Spartans in a 68-26 loss Thursday night in Langley.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Reigning WolfPack Athlete of the Week Morgan Eichenberger was 5-7 from the floor for TRU en route to a team-high 11 points and six rebounds. Kyle Koppes added another seven points for the 'Pack.
  • Myrlaine Shelvey knocked down four three-pointers on the way to scoring a game-high 21 points. Mavleen Chahal added 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was by far the WolfPack's strongest of the night as a buzzer-beating layup from TWU was the only thing that separated the teams after ten minutes with the Spartans up 14-12. The WolfPack led for over seven minutes of the quarter and jumped out to a 12-5 lead with Eichenberger powering the way with seven points. TRU forced the Spartans into making five turnovers but a bucket from Jazmin Avila right as time expired saw the hosts in the lead after ten minutes of play.
  • The rest of the night belonged to the Spartans. TWU outscored TRU 14-2 in the second quarter to jump out to a commanding lead that would only grow throughout the night as the hosts pulled away for the victory.

NOTABLE
  • TRU's record now sits at 6-11. The WolfPack are two games out of a playoff spot with three games left on their regular season schedule.
  • With six rebounds in the game, Eichenberger moves to 164 on the year. That mark ties the Kamloops product with Kassie Colonna's 2014-15 season for eighth-most in a season in program history.
  • Two blocks on the night for Hailey Merrigan gives her 20 this season, the seventh-most in a single season in program history.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will remain on the road as they head to the Island for a game against the UVic Vikes on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Victoria. That game gets underway at 5:00 p.m.
