Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Ibbetson moves to fifth in program record book as WolfPack complete sweep

QUICK FIRE
  • After dropping the first set, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team made short work of the UFV Cascades in a comeback 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20) victory inside the TCC.
  • Rylan Ibbetson moved to fifth in the program history book with 705 career kills.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Ibbetson continued to lead the way for the 'Pack in his final season with TRU. The fifth-year outside hitter from Kelowna led the team with 16 kills and 19 points in the match. Parker Bailey added 12 kills while hitting .500 per cent and setter Walker Sodaro tallied 43 assists in just four sets.
  • Roan McCarthy shouldered the load offensively for the Cascades with 18 of the team's 39 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UFV came out of the gates swinging, taking a commanding 13-6 lead early in the first set. The WolfPack wouldn't go quietly however and scored 10 of the next 14 points in the set to get back within one. The comeback wasn't meant to be though as Fraser Valley held on for the 25-22 set victory.
  • The WolfPack bounced back in the second with a 25-19 set win thanks to two key runs. The first came with the teams tied at 10-10 when TRU tallied six of the game's next seven points with Jakob Leinemann, Bailey and Ibbetson all registering a kill. The second long WolfPack run came at the very end of the set as TRU scored the final four points with a big swing from Leinemann ending the frame.
  • TRU dominated the third, making just two attack errors and hitting over .400 per cent as a team. Daniel Hitchens was in on three blocks in a row in the middle of the frame while also adding a pair of kills as the 'Pack took it 25-16.
  • 18 kills and just three attack errors in the fourth sent TRU to the match victory. Bailey and Ibbetson both had six kills in the set to give TRU the 25-20 win.

NOTABLE
  • The win moves the 'Pack to 6-10 on the season where they are in a three-way tie for eighth in the conference.
  • This weekend Ibbetson moved past Robin Schoebel (696 kills) and Tim Dobbert (701) in the program record books.
  • This makes it four-straight wins at home for the 'Pack.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly)
  • We definitely had a slow start. Fraser Valley had a game plan and executed well, but credit to the guys we made a mini comeback in the first to stabilize and then Parker Bailey, Alex Howard and Rylan Ibbetson – our outside hitters – were on and Walker Sodaro really distributed the ball well.
  • Pressure comes from different angles and this was the pressure to try and beat a team that doesn't have any wins, and we needed this victory to stay alive in the playoff race.
  • ON THE TEAM'S STRONG PLAY AS OF LATE "We played well in Langley last week for six and a half sets so it's been great. I'll add our game against Laval over the winter break as well, we played well against them. We are ready to roll, we are healthy - knock on wood - and looking forward to the challenge over the next four games.
  • ON THE PLAY OF IBBETSON "He just does everything right. He's one of those guys that you don't notice until you look at the stat sheet at the end of the night and you realize he contributes from the service line, defensively and he's just been stacking up kills his whole career."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will remain at home next weekend when they will take on the Alberta Golden Bears inside the TCC Jan. 30 & 31.
