Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack battle hard but fall to No. 1 Pandas on Senior Night

QUICK FIRE
  • In a battle between two of the top teams in the nation it was the visiting Alberta Pandas that came out on top in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-16) victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Three players hit double-digits in kills for the WolfPack. Keira Gent led the way with nine kills on the night while Maria Dancheva was a force in the middle with seven kills and five total blocks. In what will be the last regular season home weekend of her WolfPack career, Faith Christensen added five kills and a trio of block assists.
  • Abby Guezen led the way for Alberta with 15 kills en route to 19 points, but it was middle Allie Moore that was the story as the middle racked up seven solo and six assisted blocks in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack rallied from an early deficit to take the first. In a hole early down 6-1, TRU eked into the Pandas' lead to get things closer down 16-12 before going on a run that changed the set. The WolfPack scored nine of the next ten points, a run that featured three kills by Gent and a pair of blocks by Dancheva and Libby Meldrum to put the 'Pack up 21-17. Rida Erlalelitepe sent down a pair of kills late in the set as the WolfPack took the frame 25-21.
  • Two big runs in the second saw the Pandas win the frame and tie the second. Alberta, who entered the weekend leading the conference, jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the set. A kill and a block from Christensen helped the WolfPack cut that deficit to 11-7 before the Pandas ripped off the next seven-straight points to take an 18-7 lead that they wouldn't surrender en route to the 25-14 victory.
  • The story was much the same for the rest of the night as the WolfPack couldn't keep pace with a powerful Alberta attack as the Pandas finished the night with set victories of 25-15 and 25-16 to take the match.

NOTABLE
  • After the game the WolfPack celebrated graduating student-athletes: Faith Christensen, Caitlin Larrigan, Madison Maichin and Addison Witkowski. Between the four outstanding student-athletes they earned U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status in 18 of a possible 19 years.
  • The WolfPack entered the weekend ranked a program-record fourth in the nation, while Alberta was ranked first.
  • Moore's seven solo blocks set a new Canada West record, surpassing former member of the WolfPack Kaitlin Lomas' six that she recorded back in 2015.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm)
  • The first set didn't start great either but we hung in there defensively, extended rallies, gutted out some points and did some damage from the service line to get them out of system.
  • We just couldn't find answers offensively, they're a good-blocking team and when they are putting us out of system consistently, we couldn't create a ton from the middle of the court. Some of that was reception and some of that was not having a great connection, I don't think we were getting swings on all the balls that we need to to pressure on their side of the court. We didn't do a great job of using outside edges, we tested their middle blockers a lot when we were out of system and they had time to close, and hitting it into the seam of the blocks probably isn't the best solution.
  • Tomorrow we have to do a better job offensively to find solutions and also to put them in worse spots when we are out of system.
  • Some of it was our inability to execute and some of it was hey, that's a good team over there.
  • ON THE GRADUATING STUDENT-ATHLETES "We as coaches and departments get caught up with performance and while tonight wasn't the best performance for us, the performance of the seniors over their five years and what they have brought to the program can't be overstated. They brought a lot more than just points or skills in the sport of volleyball, they've done so much more and that is their legacy that will live on. They've created a culture that will be passed down to the next players, especially academically. You see all those U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian accomplishments and it's a great example for all the younger players coming through. It's been great for our team to have those leaders to create that culture."

UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will look to split the weekend tomorrow (Jan. 31) afternoon when they take on the Pandas at 3:00 p.m. inside the TCC.
