Heat too much for ‘Pack in first game of 2026

QUICK FIRE
  • The visiting UBC Okanagan Heat put forth a balanced offensive effort to topple the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team by a score of 85-41 inside the TCC Gym Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Olena Vasylenko led the way with eight points for the 'Pack while Morgan Eichenberger added both seven points and seven rebounds.
  • Six different players hit double-digits in scoring for UBCO. Tennyson McCarthy (16), Lily Pink (15), Aiko Williams (11), Kiana Kaczur (11), Kanani Coon (10) and Temi Aina (10) provided the scoring punch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A hot start shooting the ball led the Heat to an early lead. UBCO shot 62.5 per cent from the floor as a team and McCarthy led the way with six points as UBCO tallied 27 in the frame. Hailey Merrigan found a response for TRU as the third-year guard from Australia scored five of the WolfPack's ten points in the first quarter.
  • The WolfPack did their best to claw their way back into the game in the second. Olivia Randall scored five but Pink knocked down a pair of three-pointers including one right at the end of the frame to send UBCO into the half leading 45-23.
  • Vasylenko provided a spark for the WolfPack in the third with two quick buckets on either side of a steal for the product of Berdyansk, Ukraine. The WolfPack had their best quarter defensively, holding the Heat to 14 points but were unable to chip away at the lead as the visitors carried a 59-36 edge into the fourth.
  • From there UBCO was able to see out the remainder of the game to pick up the victory.

NOTABLE
  • The result drops TRU to 5-8 on the year while UBCO moves to 7-6.

UP NEXT
  • These same two teams will be back in action tomorrow evening inside the TCC with a scheduled start time of 4:00 p.m.
