Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack put up valiant effort in close loss to No. 1 T-Birds

QUICK FIRE
  • They did something no team had done in 25 games when Allison Hill found the back of the net, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack couldn't quite pull off the monumental upset in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the U SPORTS no. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds Friday night.
  • Hill's goal snapped UBC's run of 25-consecutive clean sheets in conference play, a run that stretched back to Oct. 18 of 2024.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • It was the second-straight game that Hill, a rookie from Valleyview Secondary, found the back of the net. Macyn Jolly played a beautiful pass to earn the assist while Floor Ursem made four saves on the night.
  • Sophia Ferreira and Maddy Norman both scored for UBC with Taiya Dennehy and Sienna Gibson providing the assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Playing in driving rain, the game saw plenty of chances in a high-flying first half before things tightened up in the second.
  • Ursem was first called into action just two minutes into the game when she rushed out of her net and made a strong stop with her foot to deny Jayda Thompson who was in all alone.
  • The Thunderbirds kept up the pressure however and found the opening goal of the game 11 minutes in. Dennehy sent a corner kick to the back post where Ferreira rose highest to power a header into the back of the net.
  • UBC doubled that advantage just before the 30-minute mark after Gibson unleashed a shot that was deflected by a TRU defender but drifted into the six-yard box where Norman nodded it home.
  • TRU struck back and broke the T-Birds formidable shutout streak just minutes before the halftime whistle. Sara Kuusimaki forced a turnover at the half line before playing it to Jolly. Jolly played a beautiful pass through multiple UBC defenders and towards an onrushing Hill who unleashed a left-footed blast from the edge of the 18-yard box into the top corner of the net.
  • Ursem came up big multiple times early in the second half to keep the score just 2-1.
  • The WolfPack had their best chance to even it up in the 70th minute of play when a corner kick bounced out to Hill but her long-range effort went just high.
  • Norman and Sofia Peckenpaugh both had shots towards net late in the game but the TRU defence held firm to see the game end 2-1.
NOTABLE
  • The match was between the two teams at the top of the Pacific Division standings. TRU tastes defeat for the first time this season and fall to 5-1-3 on the season while UBC continues their undefeated run to 11-0.
  • Hill is now tied for the TRU lead in scoring on two goals alongside Hannah Saxon, Sara Kuusimaki and Kat Stewart.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington)
  • "UBC is an unbelievably good team we knew that going in but I couldn't be more proud of the group and how they stuck to the plan. UBC is always a threat going forward but we conceded two goals that are a bit disappointing from our end but we know that good teams that can do that to you."
  • "The response was unbelievable. We got forward into those spaces that we wanted to expose. Scored an unbelievably good goal through the rookie Allison Hill who has two goals in two games now so hopefully she can continue to kick on but I just couldn't be more proud of the group."
  • ON THE FIGHT BACK AFTER GOING DOWN 2-0. "Absolutely we are happy with it. We said before the game that no one is winning this game alone, this is going to take everybody and that's whether you play one minute, no minutes or 90 minutes. The energy was fantastic from the whole group, the players that came into the game helped, the players that had to play the 90 minutes did their job and it was a complete team effort. We have a couple awards we give out every game for our MVP and our hard worker and I could not hand out that hard worker award tonight to one individual, so we gave it as a team award tonight for the first time because everyone worked their socks off in terrible conditions."
