Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack battle hard in close loss to No. 1 ranked T-Birds

QUICK FIRE
  • Through 88 minutes the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team was right with the top ranked team in the nation before eventually falling 2-0 to UBC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Toran Rutherford made seven stops for a WolfPack team that defended strongly for much of the night.
  • Henri Godbout scored both goals for the Thunderbirds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three saves from Rutherford early kept TRU right with UBC before the Thunderbirds finally opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Godbout took a pass from Yuan Yu-Hsuan inside the 18-yard box and found the back of the net.
  • Valiant WolfPack defending ,including multiple defenders throwing themselves in front of the ball to block shots, kept the score at 1-0 in favour of the hosts at the halftime whistle.
  • With defenders Domenico Comita and Lewis Crompton providing a stable core in the WolfPack backline, TRU continued to keep things close early in the second half before finding their footing late.
  • Around the 70th minute mark, the WolfPack took control of the proceedings with substitutes Ryan Prasad and Sepehr Iravani both making dangerous runs near the box but the 'Pack just couldn't quite find the finishing touch.
  • UBC scored the insurance marker with less than minute to go in the game.

NOTABLE
  • With three games left to play in the season, the result moves the WolfPack to a record of 6-6 where they occupy the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.
  • Holding a winning percentage of .500 per cent, the 'Pack are ahead of a 5-6-2 TWU Spartans team that they will play twice in their last three games of the year.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "Playing against the top team in the country you have to stay organized and balanced and I thought we were really solid defensively today. Right at the end in the last 20 minutes we started to really put the pressure on them but unfortunately a call didn't go our way and they scored late."
  • "I was really proud with how the guys played today, UBC is the top team in the country so for us to be able to battle them is what we needed, especially going into tomorrow."
  • "Domenico Comita and Lewis Crompton at the back were great. Lewis coming back into the lineup after missing four or five games due to injury was huge for us and him and Domenico at the back were really solid."
  • ON THE MESSAGE HEADING INTO TOMORROW "It's to keep doing what we did today. Sometimes after a couple losses guys can have their heads down but after the game today and showing that we can compete like that gives us some really positive feeling going into tomorrow."

UP NEXT
  • It's an extremely important game on tap for the WolfPack tomorrow when they travel to Langley to face the Spartans in a game that gets underway at 7:15 p.m.
