Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Spartans edge WolfPack with last minute goal

QUICK FIRE
  • A late goal was the only difference on the night as the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's soccer team played the TWU Spartans even through 87 minutes before falling 1-0 in Langley Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • As she has been all season long, WolfPack goalkeeper Floor Ursem was excellent in net. The product of Uitgeest, Netherlands made six stops in the contest and was a calming presence at the back for the WolfPack. Makenna Ford had a pair of shots on goal while all 15 players that checked into the game for the 'Pack helped to put together a strong defensive effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An evenly played first half that ended 0-0 saw TRU fire two shots on goal to Trinity Western's three.
  • The Spartans best chance to score came in the 31st minute when Sophie Crowther got a shot off from in-close but Ursem was perfectly positioned to parry the ball away from danger and not allow any rebound opportunities.
  • TRU's best chance in the opening 45 minutes came from the very last kick of the half. A shot from Allison Hill was blocked by a TWU defender's arm just outside of the 18-yard box resulting in a WolfPack free-kick in a very dangerous position. Ford stepped up and put the ball over the wall of TWU defenders and towards net but the Spartans' keeper was there to make the save.
  • Hill had a shot on goal in the 52nd minute as the WolfPack started the second half searching for the winner. Ursem made a couple strong stops as the two teams traded chances before everything changed in the 73rd minute. A player from the WolfPack and one from the Spartans came together in a challenge for the ball but the Spartan walked away with a yellow card while the 'Pack were handed a red to send them down to 10 players on the field for the rest of the game.
  • Forced to defend from then on out, the 'Pack fought tirelessly to keep the game tied with more saves from Ursem and some heroic defending from throughout the lineup keeping the game all square until the 87th minute.
  • The Spartans grabbed the lone goal of the game off a corner kick with a Clara Chudley header and were able to see the game out from there.

NOTABLE
  • The loss was just the second of the season for a WolfPack squad that is now 6-2-4 and have 22 points on the season. They are now just behind the 7-3-2 Spartans for second place in the Pacific Division and the right to host a home playoff game.
  • Next weekend the WolfPack will honour graduating student-athletes Bridget Baird, Bella Geremia, Macyn Jolly, Makayla Kusch, Esi Lufo, Alexis Virgo and Berea Woldeyes in the final regular season home games of their WolfPack careers.

UP NEXT
  • That battle for second place will come down to the very last games of the season next weekend. TRU will return to Hillside Stadium where they will first host the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday, Oct. 23 and then these very same Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 24. Both those games get underway at 5:00 p.m.
