WolfPack rally to start season with a win over Cougars

QUICK FIRE
  • After falling in the first set the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team rebounded to win the next three-straight to secure a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20) over the MRU Cougars Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Hail Ward, Rida Erlalelitepe and Keira Gent powered the 'Pack attack with 16, 11 and 10 kills respectively. Ward added a pair of aces while Erlalelitepe had 14 digs. Libby Meldrum conducted the offence to the tune of 40 assists while also contributing a trio of block assists.
  • Erika Bang led the Cougars with 16 kills on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After falling in a close first set 25-23, the 'Pack rebounded to claim the next three-straight.
  • A 6-1 WolfPack run in the middle of the second set that featured two kills apiece from Ward and Erlalelitepe saw the 'pack take a commanding 17-11 edge. Ward ended the frame with a kill which was just one of her ten points in the set.
  • The Wolfpack kept things rolling in a third set that they had to mount a comeback in. Down 22-21 TRU ripped off the next four-straight points, including an ace from rookie Akeira Anseth, to take the set 25-22.
  • TRU was able to put the game away in the fourth in large part due to an 8-1 run that gave them a 22-17 edge they wouldn't surrender en route to the victory.

NOTABLE
  • The win makes it the third season in a row that TRU has started their Canada West campaign with a victory.
  • The WolfPack entered the season ranked second in the Canada West preseason coaches poll while the Cougars were tenth.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm
  • It was one of those nights where we had to grind through, nothing came easy. Credit to Mount Royal, they passed quite well and their block defence to transition was better than ours."
  • "We made it through the night by being pretty steady in our sideout game."
  • "Obviously happy to get the win but we know Mount Royal is going to come out hard tomorrow so we have to do a good job of stepping up a little bit, bringing a little more energy and discipline to our game, managing situations a little better but overall I'm happy to get a win on the road against a tough competitor."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will look to complete the sweep to start their season tomorrow when they face the Cougars in a rematch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT in Calgary.
