Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack outlast TWolves to register season-opening victory

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team started their 2026-27 Canada West campaign off on the right foot Saturday afternoon in Prince George, defeating the UNBC Timberwolves by a score of 69-61.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • It was an incredibly balanced attack on the night for the WolfPack with four players hitting double-digits in scoring and one more just barely missing out. Sydney Vollrath (14), Olivia Randall (12), Olena Vasylenko (10), Morgan Eichenberger (10) and Hailey Merrigan (8) were the top scorers for the 'Pack. Randall, a fourth-year sharpshooter from Regina went 5-6 from the floor in the game, including 2-2 from three-point range.
  • Hazel Phillips powered the TWolves with 14 points on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Everything was falling for the WolfPack early as the team jumped out to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter of play. Vollrath led the way with seven points followed closely by Eichenberger who had six points and five rebounds in the opening frame.
  • While things tightened up in the second quarter, the 'Pack were able to hold UNBC at bay, taking the frame 20-18 and holding a 45-27 lead at the halftime break.
  • With TRU holding a 19-point lead heading into the fourth quarter at 62-43, things got interesting late. The Timberwolves went on a 16-4 run to start the final frame and cut the WolfPack's lead to just seven with 1:19 left to play. The 'Pack refused to let that lead slip away however and were able to see out the game with three free-throws from Vasylneko late to claim the 69-61 victory.
NOTABLE
  • This marks the first time the WolfPack have started their Canada West schedule with a win since the 2019 campaign.
  • A large difference in the game was TRU's ability to handle the ball, turning it over just nine times while forcing UNBC into 18.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back in action next Sunday, Nov. 1, when they host the UBC Okangan Heat in their first game of the year inside the TCC. That game gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
