Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Two goals in two minutes sends WolfPack to home victory

QUICK FIRE
  • A pair of goals just two minutes apart in the second half sent the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to a commanding 2-0 victory over the UFV Cascades inside Hillside Stadium Sunday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Allison Hill and veteran Kat Stewart supplied the scoring for TRU with Floor Ursem making a pair of stops for her sixth shutout of the season. Sara Kuusimaki and Hill earned assists in the game.
  • Alana Madec was strong in net for the Cascades with five stops in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For a half that ended 0-0, both teams had quality scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes of play.
  • The WolfPack called Madec into action three times. First in the 22nd minute a cross attempt from Hill nearly went in at the near post but Madec was able to dive to her left and keep it out. Then in the 25th minute Stewart let go a long-range chip that Madec was able to corral. The WolfPack's final dangerous chance of the opening frame came when Stewart played a ball into Hannah Saxon but her blast from the top of the 18-yard box was steered away by Madec.
  • Fraser Valley's best chance in the first half came from the foot of the dangerous Kianna Langston. The UFV attacker got in-behind the WolfPack defence after a set-piece and only a last-ditch tackle from Deneault denied her from a clear look at goal.
  • Madec came up huge once again for the Cascades in the 64th minute when she dove low and to her right to parry away Hill's effort from the penalty spot after the Kamloops rookie earned the chance by being hauled down in the 18-yard box.
  • TRU needed just two minutes to flip the game on its head.
  • First Hill was able to score the first of her WolfPack career after Saxon whipped a ball into the box that Kuusimaki steered towards Hill and the product of Valleyview Secondary made no mistake to send the ball into the far corner with a first-time strike.
  • Just two minutes later the WolfPack got their insurance marker when Hill played a ball over the top of the UFV defence and into the path of Stewart who collected the ball 20 yards away from net and calmly slotted it past an onrushing Madec.
  • The WolfPack were able to see out the rest of the game from there with Ursem not really being tested down the stretch run of the game.
NOTABLE
  • With five wins and three ties to start their season, the WolfPack continue their longest undefeated run to start a Canada West campaign in program history.
  • The win officially moves the WolfPack (5-0-3) past the U SPORTS No. 10 ranked TWU Spartans (5-3-2) for second place in the Pacific Division. The WolfPack – who beat TWU on Saturday – also hold two games in hand over TWU.
  • The win clinches the season series for TRU over UFV. The two teams played three times this season with the WolfPack holding a record of 2-0-1 and keeping a clean sheet in all three games.
  • The WolfPack have surrendered just two goals through eight games this season.
  • Ursem is tied with Calgary's Cheridan Johnson and UBC's Emma Sparrow for the conference lead in shutouts with six.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington)
  • "UFV's always difficult to play against. Our message going into today was to go in and grind, we knew getting back at nearly midnight last night after putting in a shift at Trinity we knew it was going to be hard. Credit to UFV they always make it difficult, they take away the spaces that you want to play in."
  • "I'm so happy for Allison Hill, she stepped up to take the penalty and it didn't go right for her. Some kids, especially first years, could crumble under that and disappear out of the game but she stepped up and got a goal and an assist so I'm super proud for her character to shine through like that and it's a testament to who she is as a human so we are pumped for her."
  • ON BEING UNDEFEATED THROUGH EIGHT GAMES "It's a great achievement but they don't hand any medals out at the midpoint of the season. We know there's a lot of work still to do and we have some big games coming up. With our next game being against UBC if we are sitting here saying we are undefeated after that I'll be very, very happy."
  • "We'll dust ourselves off, regroup, assess some of the injuries we've picked up and have a plan for next week."
  • "We've had a great start and credit to the whole team, even the players that haven't seen as many minutes as they'd like, they have given energy off the bench, so we'll do our best to keep on rolling and see if we can get some more results and into the postseason."

(WolfPack midfielder Allison Hill)
  • ON SCORING HER FIRST GOAL "I was just so excited to be honest, it felt like slow motion and to be surrounded by my teammates after, I was just buzzing."
  • ON REBOUNDING AFTER HAVING A PENALTY KICK SAVED "I was honestly just a little angry at myself and I tried to take that out on the other team. I got a little more firepower after that to just go for it."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will remain in Kamloops next weekend as they get set to host the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, Oct. 9 and the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday, Oct. 10. Both of those games get underway at 5:00 p.m.
