WolfPack battle T-Birds hard but fall in CW Bronze Medal game

QUICK FIRE
  • In what was a back-and-forth battle between two teams bound for the U SPORTS National Championship tournament it was the UBC Thunderbirds that came out on top by a score of 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20) over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team.
  • The win secured Canada West bronze medals for the Thunderbirds while the WolfPack's finish of fourth in the conference ties for their best-ever in program history.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Middle blockers Maria Dancheva and Myah Cressy were both outstanding for the WolfPack. Dancheva led the way with 12 kills, five blocks and a .400 hitting percentage while Cressy was right behind with marks of 11 kills, four blocks and a .429 hitting percentage. Setter Libby Meldrum recorded a game-high 38 assists for the 'Pack.
  • A three-pronged attack of Kylee Glanville (13 kills), Aimee Skinner (12) and Lucy Borowski (10) powered the Thunderbirds to victory. Seven different members of UBC had a service ace on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the potential to claim the first Canada West medal in program history on the line, the WolfPack started hot. Cressy was in on two blocks early as the 'Pack jumped out to a quick 6-0 advantage. It didn't take long for UBC to respond however with an 11-4 run of their own to take their first lead of the set at 11-10. The teams traded points throughout the middle portion of the set before UBC scored eight of the frame's final nine points to take it 25-17.
  • Led by Dancheva TRU was in front wire-to-wire en route to taking the second set 25-22. Cressy, Dancheva and Hail Ward all had kills early to help TRU jump out to a 9-3 edge.  While UBC once again battled back, this time it was the WolfPack's turn to come up clutch late with Dancheva combining with Keira Gent for a block to set up set-point at 24-22 before the Bulgarian ended the frame with her fifth kill of the set.
  • The Thunderbirds held on to take a back-and-forth third set that featured four lead changes and a tied score 11 times. Dancheva had four kills and Cressy three, but UBC scored the final four points in the set to turn a 21-21 tie into a 25-21 victory.
  • After a tight opening to the fourth, which saw the teams tied at 12-12, UBC started to pull ahead taking a 16-12 lead and never relinquishing their lead. Skinner ended the match with a kill, as UBC took the fourth 25-20.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm
  • Overall, I thought the girls battled. Obviously not having Rida Erlalelitepe out there is different for our squad and changes some things but I thought both Lucy Millam and Lauren Junck came in and did a good job and competed.
  • I thought Myah was excellent and Maria had a nice match. Our middle blockers really held us in the match.
  • UBC passed the ball well and we missed a few serves and then went a little too tentative from the service line but generally we hung in there, gave ourselves a chance and while it didn't fall our way in the end I'm proud of the way the girls battled tonight.
