Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Alesandro Comita tallies in return to WolfPack, TRU shuts out Cascades

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team made it two-straight wins to start their season Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades by a score of 1-0 inside Hillside Stadium.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Playing his first game for the WolfPack since the 2023-24 campaign, Kamloops product Alesandro Comita scored the game-winner for the WolfPack.
  • Matteo Lamon made five saves in the WolfPack net to record his second-straight shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded chances early. Lamon was called into action first when he was forced into a making a diving stop off a long-range effort from Ryan Torresan. Last night's WolfPack goalscorer Kaelin Nguyen came close to opening the score in the 14th minute of play but a sprawling Cascades defender cleared the ball away from the net.
  • From there TRU took control for the rest of the first half, pinning UFV deep in their own end and launching attack after attack at the Cascades' net. That pressure finally paid off for TRU on their fifth corner kick in the span of two-and-a-half minutes. Comita whipped a ball into the fray where it bounced off a Cascades' body and into the back of the net to send TRU into the halftime whistle with the lead.
  • While the WolfPack carried play early in the second half, the Cascades took control late. Both Brody Perkin and Torresan got their heads on balls deep in the WolfPack penalty are off dangerous crosses but neither was able to direct the ball towards net.
  • From there the combination of Lamon and a rock-steady WolfPack backline that featured Lewis Crompton, Domenico Comita and Liam Freathy kept things calm at the back to send TRU to the 1-0 victory.

NOTABLE

  • TRU was ranked ninth in the Canada West preseason coaches' poll with the Cascades placing fifth.
  • This marks the first time the WolfPack have started the season 2-0 since the 2022 season.
  • With five saves today and four last night, Matteo Lamon has now made nine stops en route to recording back-to-back shutouts for TRU.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "I thought we had a really good first half, UFV is another of the top teams in Canada West so for us to play the way we did in the first half was great. The second half I was probably not as happy with because we played a little disjointed but the one thing I did love was the defending, the fight and the battle. We knew they were going to come at us really hard and I thought defensively and our goalkeeping was again really solid today.
  • "That backline of Lewis Crompton, Domenico Comita, Liam Freathy and then goalkeeper Matteo Lamon were excellent. UFV was playing lots of balls into the box that were difficult to deal with but they were able to take care of it."
  • "The guys are showing a lot of resilience which is great. We are still trying to figure things out with a lot of new players, so the fact that we were able to come out with two wins this weekend while still not really hitting our stride is a really good sign."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will hit the road next weekend as they embark upon a swing trip that will see them face the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George on Friday, Sept. 4 before taking on the UBCO Heat in Kelowna on Sunday, Sept. 6. Those games can we watched live on Canada West tv.
