Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Saxon fires WolfPack to victory as Ursem sets program record

QUICK FIRE
  • A goal from Hannah Saxon and a record-setting shutout from Floor Ursem powered the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the UFV Cascades Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Saxon, a rookie from Auckland, NZ, scored her second of the season with a beautiful left-footed strike. Ursem made four comfortable saves for the eighth shutout of her WolfPack career, the most of any player in the program's Canada West history.
  • Camryn Lyon and Kiana Langston generated the best scoring chances of the night for the Cascades while Alana Madec made seven stops, several outstanding ones, in the UFV net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A game that was slow to start saw Ursem first called into action in the 23rd minute when UFV's Kyla Kerr let loose a long-rage effort that goalkeeper from the Netherlands had to dive to catch.
  • The WolfPack began to pile pressure on late in the first half and finally found the breakthrough in the 38th minute of action. From a set piece just inside of UFV's half, Alexis Virgo sent a ball into the box where a Cascades' defender was able to clear the danger only as far as a waiting Saxon who needed just one touch to settle the ball before unleashing a left-footed blast that flew into the top corner of the net.
  • TRU rode that momentum into the halftime break, leading the match 1-0.
  • Madec kept the Cascades in the match with a pair of great saves early in the second half. First the second-year goalkeeper came up big to stop a TRU breakaway in the 55th minute before making a terrific diving stop off a WolfPack shot just minutes later.
  • A stout WolfPack defence limited Fraser Valley's chances the rest of the way with Ursem coming off her line to claim a dangerous cross from Lyon in the 80th minute before securing the shutout and the victory with a stop on an effort from Langston in the 90th minute.

NOTABLE
  • With three wins and three ties to start their season, the WolfPack continue their longest undefeated run to start a Canada West campaign in program history.
  • Ursem moved past Danielle Robertson to claim sole possession of the most shutouts in the program's Canada West history. The product of Uitgeest, Netherlands now has four shutouts in the team's first six games this season.
  • TRU had 12 shots in the game to UFV's six and six corners to the Cascades' one.
  • TRU remains in third place in the Pacific Division with 12 points on the season. They are four points clear of fourth-place UFV with two games in hand.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington)
  • "We showed real character in that one because it was a real grind to get the result. Credit to UFV, they came here on a difficult road trip and they gave everything, they were tough to break down. It was a really good strike from Hannah Saxon to win the game so we are happy with the result. I don't think we necessarily played our best but we showed character. Those are games that you have to grind out and we did that so super happy to go into the next weekend still undefeated."
  • ON HOW TRU WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE END OF THE GAME "That was due to smart choices on the park, it was great to see them making those decisions. Sometimes you feel like you want to cross a ball into the box but Makenna Ford did a great job of holding the ball in the corner. The team managed the game well. Credit to UFV they threw some extra bodies forwards and made us defend right to the very end."
  • ON FLOOR URSEM "She had a couple routine saves tonight but she just injects confidence into the back three. And I think this year she has been so much quicker off her line and a lot more vocal now that she's feeling more confident as a second year. She's been outstanding."

UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack have a split weekend ahead of them for their next action. First they will face the TWU Spartans in Langley on Oct. 3 before returning to Kamloops to face these very same Cascades on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. inside Hillside Stadium.
