Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Four-goal outburst sends WolfPack past Huskies

QUICK FIRE
  • Two goals on either side of the halftime whistle were more than enough for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team to pick up a 4-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday afternoon.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack struck early with Nguyen scoring just 16 minutes into the game. Defender Liam Freathy stepped up to intercept a Huskies' past and surged through the opposition midfield before laying a ball towards Nguyen who found a picture-perfect finish in the bottom corner.
  • TRU doubled that lead through Finley in the 32nd minute of play. A smart passage of passing by the WolfPack ended with Ghasemi slipping a ball through to Finley inside the 18-yard box and the forward from Preston, ENG made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
  • With the game appearing to be well in hand, disaster struck for the WolfPack just prior to the halftime whistle. Tao Hein and A.J. Calado both scored for Saskatchewan in the 40th and 45th minute respectively to send the teams into the halftime break knotted up 2-2.
  • The WolfPack refused to let the game slip away however, re-taking command of the game right from the start of the second half.
  • That pressure paid off almost immediately when Kamloops product Aiden Muzio opened his WolfPack scoring account in the 49th minute. A great run down the win by James Rainbird ended with a cross into the box and Muzio was in the right spot at the right time to power the ensuing loose ball into the top corner of the net.
  • Lachlan Will put the game to bed not long after in the 53rd minute. Will controlled a long kick forward from Rutherford before cutting into the middle of the field and past a pair of Huskies' defenders to unleash a rocket of a shot into the back of the net.

NOTABLE
  • TRU is now 5-3 on the season with the result and hold sole possession of second-place in the Pacific Division of Canada West soccer.
  • Muzio, a product of Valleyview Secondary, scored his first WolfPack goal in what was his first start of the season.
  • TRU outshot Saskatchewan 14-9 in the game.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "We really needed that. One of the things we talked about before the game was that our guys that can put the ball in the back of the net needed to shoot more and create more opportunities and they did that which is great."
  • "Besides a five-minute stretch at the end of the half we dominated the first half quite significantly. And then we carried that over into the second half especially in the first 15-20 minutes. We just created a lot of goalscoring opportunities which is what we are looking for."
  • ON SECURING THREE POINTS ON THE ROAD "We needed that win just to get us back on track, to end the trip on a positive note. Being at home now for three of the next four weekends is going to be huge, it's been quite an exhausting stretch with six of our first eight games on the road. Being able to come away from that with a record of 3-3 on the road, I'll take that all day."
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack have just one game on the slate next weekend. They will play host to the Lethbridge Pronghorns inside Hillside Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
