Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack rally from early deficit to defeat TWolves

QUICK FIRE
  • After falling behind early, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team stormed back with a pair of goals to defeat the UNBC Timberwolves 2-1 in Prince George Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • James Rainbird of Chelmsford, ENG, scored the first goal of his young WolfPack career in the first half with Kaelin Nguyen supplying the game-winning marker in the 60th minute. Lucas Kirnon supplied an assist on Rainbird's goal while Matteo Lamon made three saves to record his third win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNBC opened the scoring 17 minutes into the match when James Jordan got in behind the 'Pack defensive line and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
  • It took the WolfPack just five minutes to respond. Alesandro Comita sent a corner kick into the 18-yard box where Kirnon rose highest to flick the ball on to a wide-open Rainbird at the back post.
  • The WolfPack fired four more shots towards net in the first half but were unable to take the lead as the teams headed into the break knotted up at 1-1.
  • TRU came out of the break with momentum on their side and scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute of play.
  • Rainbird was again involved in the 'Pack attack as he played a ball to Aiden Muzio. Muzio, a rookie from Kamloops, fired a shot on net that the UNBC goalkeeper saved but Nguyen was in the right place at the right time to deposit the rebound into the back of the net.
  • Lamon made a pair of saves after TRU took the lead to preserve the 2-1 victory for the WolfPack.

NOTABLE
  • The win is TRU's third-straight to start the season, giving them their best start since 2022 and marking only the second time in the program's Canada West history that they have started a season 3-0.
  • Kaelin Nguyen continued a strong start to his WolfPack career with two goals in the opening three games of the season. Last year's leading scorer on the team tallied four in the team's 16 games.
  • TRU had five corners to UNBC's one in the game.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "It was very much a back-and-forth battle. We went down early, a little bit against the flow of play, but it was a well-worked goal on their part, they hit us in transition. But then we kept fighting back, we got the tying goal to even things up in the first half. The second half it was the same thing, a bunch of back-and-forth play and we were able to get the winner."
  • "Once again defensively I thought we were good, our goalkeeping was solid again and it was just a good battle. It's always a good battle here against UNBC."
  • "They put the pressure on late so it was good for us to once again be stout defensively, make good decisions and it's really great to see how resilient we were."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will stay out on the road as they now travel to Kelowna to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat Sunday Sept. 6 at 2:45 p.m.
