MACEWEN/CHAMPLAIN ST LAWRENCE GOLFERS LEAD LATE IN THE OPENING ROUND OF 2010 PING/CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

    [caption id="attachment_3962" align="alignnone" width="200" caption="Grant McEwen of Alberta leads the mens competition late in round one"]Grant McEwen of Alberta leads the mens competition late in round one[/caption] Golfers from Grant MacEwen University in Alberta and Champlain St. Lawrence in Quebec find themselves atop of the leader board late in the opening round of the 2010 PING/CCAA Golf Nationals being held at The Dunes at Kamloops.  Play was suspended with the last group playing on the 18 th hole. Tanner Fermaniuk of MacEwen leads the men’s individual category after shooting a blistering  seven under par 65.    He holds a four shot lead on two golfers from Humber College of Ontario—Greg Balisto and David Lang. Adam Gruber of the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack  and Chad Currie of Niagara College are next at 70.  “The course was pretty difficult at times due to the wind,” stated Gruber“ It warmed up on the back nine which made things a little difficult with some of the pins a little unplayable.”  Gruber birdied the first, fourth, sixth and 11 th holes. Among the women’s individual scores:  Josee Doyon of Champlain St Lawrence of Quebec leads with a 74.  That is two strokes ahead of Tiffany Albath of Durham College of Ontario.  Kayleigh Kramer of Durham is third at 78. “I made a lot of great putts and I felt my short game was great,” said Doyon afterwards. “I had a tough time on the 16 th with my driver.  This is a beautiful course though and it was fun to play.” In the team category:  Humber College leads with 286. That is nine shots better than Camosun College of British Columbia.   University of the Fraser Valley is third at 296.   MacEwen and Niagara are fourth at 298.  The host WolfPack sit in 14 th spot with a total of 312. In the women’s team event: Durham leads with 154.  UBCO of British Columbia is second at 170 followed by  Holland College of Prince Edward Island at 174.  Mount Royal Cougars and Lethbridge Kodiacs of Alberta are fourth at 175. The first round will be completed tomorrow morning (Oct 14) before the second round begins. For the TRU WolfPack: Adam Gruber shot a 70,  Mark Gruber carded a 77,  Geoff Fahlman came in with an 81.  Chase Broadfoot shot an 84.  Colby Cook carded an 86.  Two of the WolfPack are playing as individuals:  Brennan Arduini shot  a 78 while Quinn Campbell fired an 81.
