The two schools captured the CIS championships in the gold medal matches held at the Kamloops Curling Club on Sunday (Mar 24).
In the women’s final, the Breanne Meakin foursome went through the entire five day event unbeaten. In the final, they disposed of Kelsey Rocque and her Alberta Pandas foursome 9-7.

Meakin, who was selected as the CIS 2
nd team all-star skip earlier, opened up a 3-0 lead after two ends. But Rocque, the CIS 1
st team all-star, and her foursome batteld back scoring a four ender in the third end to lead 4-3.

Manitoba regained the lead with two of their own in the fourth end. With a 5-4 lead, Alberta came back with singles in the fifth and sixth ends. Meakin scored two in both the ninth and tenth to come away with the gold medal.

As a team, Manitoba curled 72 per cent in the final with Alberta curling 69 per cent.

Meakin’s gold medal rink had Krysten Karwacki at lead, Selena Kaatz at secondand Ashley Howard at third. Karwacki was a first team CIS all-star. Kaatz and Howard were second team all-star selections. They were coached by Tom Clasper.

In the men’s finale, Jake Walker proved why he was chosen as the CIS 1
st team all-star skip. The Waterloo skip curled an amazing 93 per cent in a 7-5 victory over Brendan Bottcher and his Alberta Golden Bears foursome.

After a scoreless first end, Alberta jumped out to a 1-0 lead. But Waterloo came back with a deuce in the third and added three more in the seventh end along with one in the ninth.
Alberta counted two in the sixth, one in the eighth end and one more in the 10 th.
As a team, Alberta curled 82 per cent while Waterloo had an 85 per cent success rate.

The gold medal Waterloo foursome consisted of lead James Freeman, second Jordan Moreau, third Edward Cyr along with Walker. The coach was Scott Allen and the alternate Nathan Ransom. Along with Walker, Cyr was a first team CIS all-star. Freeman was named to the CIS second all-star team.
The host Thompson Rivers captured the bronze medal on the men’s side while St. Mary’s won the bronze in the women’s event. Both those happened on Saturday (Mar 23).
