Cheerleaders Top Competition in Edmonton.

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Cheerleading squad have another first place banner to add to their collection. The Cheerleaders captured first place at this weekend’s “Western Cheerific Championship” in Edmonton, Alberta. The WolfPack beat the host University of Alberta in the Level 4 competition. They were the only two teams involved in that category. “The U of A team has been around a very long time with a strong reputation,’ said TRU co head coach Meagan Blakely. “ They dropped from Level 6 so we didn’t know what to expect from them going in.” Blakely added: “Our team had an incredible run and received a standing ovation both when they entered the floor and when they left. It seemed as if everyone knew who TRU was and the other athletes attending the competition (1000 people) were, for loss of a better phrase, 'fan girling' over the TRU competitive team. We received incredible feedback and comments from many parents, competition coordinators, other coaches and athletes who apparently have been following our program on social media in excitement for the team to attend. We were the only team from British Columbia. “ Blakely went onto say: “The routine was the best we’ve have ever done. We only had one minor deduction (.5) for a stunt error, but the rest went perfectly. Our technique was better than earlier this season and it’s something we still plan on focusing on for the next month, along with building endurance so that when we perform and get fatigued, our technique won’t suffer.” The Cheerleaders have two more competitions: the ATC Canadian Championship at UBC on April 2nd and the Sea to Sky International Championship in Vancouver April 8-9th. This is the first year that TRU has had a ‘truly’ competitive cheer team.
