Three teams garnered the most nominees as the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack have announced the finalists for their 2019-20 athletic awards.
The WolfPack men's basketball and volleyball team along with women's volleyball each had four athletes among the finalists for the awards, which will be announced via social media on Thursday, April 2
nd as opposed to the traditional in-person event to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The finalists for the Doctor Roger H. Barnsley Scholar/Athlete are Micheal Rouault (Vernon, BC) of men's basketball, Ryley McRae (Kamloops, BC) of swimming and
Kyle Behiels (Edmonton, AB) of men's volleyball. Rouault won the award last year.
The finalists for the female Barnsley award are:
Olga Savenchuk (Donetsk, Ukraine) from volleyball,
Emma Piggin (Kamloops, BC) from basketball and
Gwen Freeze (Kamloops, BC) of soccer.
The Doctor Roger H. Barnsley Award is based on a combination of athletic performance and academic achievements.
The finalists for the Sports Task Force athlete of the year-which is based on athletic performance are on the women's side:
Kendra Finch (North Vancouver, BC) of volleyball,
Leilani Carney (Burnaby, BC) from basketball and
Lily Moran (White Rock, BC) of cheerleading.
On the men's side, the finalists are Jan Pirretas (Barcelona, Spain) from soccer,
Sam Taylor Parks (Kelowna, BC) of volleyball and Rouault.
For the Cliff Neufeld Leadership athlete of the year (which is a combination of athletic performance, academic achievement and community service), the female finalist are
Natalie Verdiel (Powell River, BC) of soccer,
Zoe Painter (Whitehorse, YT) from cross country and Finch.
The male finalists are Taylor Parks, Pirretas and Rouault.
Rouault has won the Neufeld award the last two years while Finch took home the honor in 2018-19.
Finalists for newcomer of the year for 2019-20 are
Nimo Benne (Castricum, Netherlands) from volleyball,
Rojhae Colbert (Phoenix, AZ) from basketball and soccer's
Denzel Marican (Kamloops, BC) on the men's side.
Jordin Wilkinson (North Battleford, SK) of basketball, soccer's
Rylee Mugridge ( Maple Ridge, BC) and Kseniya Kociygit (Byaroza, Belarus) of volleyball are the finalists in the women's category.
There could be a number of other awards handed out including the Tyler Lowey Comeback of the Year, The WolfPack Appreciation award and the Director's award. Of these three honors, only the Directors award is handed out every year.
The awards will be announced during the webcast on April 2, 2020 which will begin at 6 PM on the WolfPack website (
www.gowolfpack.ca), their YouTube channel and Facebook. The webcast will also include recognizing those athletes who won major U SPORTS and Canada West honors this season and feature an address by basketball player
Joe Davis (Kamloops, BC) who was chosen to present on behalf of the fifth year and graduating players.
