Cheerleading's "Team Black" win "At Large" Bid to 2021 World Champs

For the second straight year, Thompson Rivers University WolfPack cheerleading has won the right to attend the World Championships.
Competing at the Provincial championships at the PNE Forum on Sunday (Mar 8),  TRU's "Team Black" earned an "At Large" bid to the 2021 ESPN World Cheerleading championships.

"This is a massive accomplishment for us," said WolfPack head coach Meaghan Blakely afterwards.  " We will we representing TRU on the International World stage again in January 2021."

The WolfPack went against five teams at the BC Provincials.  One "Full Paid" bid (which the WolfPack won last year in Alberta), and two "At Large" bids.
The UVIC  Vikes won the 2021 BC "Full Paid" bid with the WolfPack and the UBC Cheer team getting the "At Large" Bids.  The other teams competing on Sunday were SFU and "Team Orange" from Thompson Rivers.

"They (the judges) could have handed out one more at large bid but they decided not to," Blakely stated.  "To get the bid and represent the BC association is a MASSIVE honor and speaks volumes."

According to Blakely, the winning UVIC squad had one less deduction than Team Black as the TRU squad had two falls compared to UVIC's one.
"Points aren't the only factor," she explained. " It is also the judges discretion. There is a lot that goes into deciding who is firstly even gets a bid but then who gets which one."

This is the second year that Thompson Rivers has decided to vye for a bid and the second year they achieved it. At the 2020 competition, Team Black finished fifth .

"We are very proud of these girls," she added.

The work now begins for Team Black as they will need to raise approximately 30 thousand dollars. This will include flights, hotel, Disney package and competition registration.

"The good news is that we have 10 months to save and fundraise and come up with a plan," Blakely stated.
