An improved effort but the end result was the same as the youthful Thompson Rivers University WolfPack fell 2-0 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in an exhibition women's soccer tourney being held in Regina.
The WolfPack were down 1-0 after the first half and saw their preseason record fall to 3-2.
I felt today was a good progression from yesterday, " says TRU head coach
Mark Pennington. " We were playing a strong team that consistently makes the playoffs. We need to cut out the mistakes around both goals. We were punished again as Sask's two goals were very preventable."
Thompson Rivers went with sophomore keeper
Marissa Young (Calgary, AB) in the nets."
" There were some encouraging performances especially from the back four. I thought
Georgia Aldus (3
rd year defender, Kamloops, BC) and
Natalie Verdiel (5
th year, defender, Powell River, BC) gave us meaningful minutes and looked solid."
Pennington added, " We were unlucky from an attacking perspective and missed a penalty shot early in the match. We had another three or four quality chances that we were unable to convert."
He stated, " The players have taken some really positive steps through these two matches here. I am happy with the direction of the group."
The WolfPack close out the tournament and their exhibition campaign with a match on Saturday (Aug 24) against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. "It will be another chance to continue getting closer to where we want to be come the start of the season."
Thompson Rivers begins its 2019-20 Canada West campaign on Thursday, September 5
th when they visit the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves in Prince George, BC. They then head to Calgary to take on the Dinos on Saturday September 7
th. Their home opener isn't until Friday, September 13
th when they host the MacEwan University Griffins on the Warner Rentals field at Hillside Stadium. It's a 5:30 PM kick off.
