Playoff aspirations for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's basketball hit a snag Friday morning (Jan 17).
The WolfPack were upended by the previously winless Brandon University Bobcats 83-52. The Bobcats move to 1-12 on the year as the Pack fall to 6-7. Brandon led by 31 points at one point of the contest.
The game was played in the afternoon as part of Brandon's school day. There were 1200 students from 16 schools on hand at the Healthy Living Centre.
The WolfPack were led by
Jordin Wilkinson (4
th year, guard, North Battleford, SK) with 12 points and five rebounds.
Jordon Haggerty (3
rd year, guard, Saskatoon, SK) had 12 points.
Leilani Carney (5
th year, guard, Burnaby, BC) contributed 9 points and four assists.
Adrianna Proulx (4
th year, forward, Thompson, MB) paced Brandon with 19 points and six rebounds while Kelsey Starchuck (1
st year, forward, Regina, SK)added 13 points and three assists and Sydney Teece (1
st year, forward, Regina, SK) chipped in with nine points and seven boards.
Brandon scored 38 points in the paint to TRU's 20 and had 19 points off turnovers in comparison to 12 for the WolfPack.
Said WolfPack head coach
Goran Nogic afterwards, " They dominated the inside game (with their players scoring 43 compared to just two for our inside players). We had only four free throws compared to their 23 and didn't go to the line in the second, third or fourth quarters. They simply attacked the hoop better than we did."
The game was the first for the Bobcats on home court in the 2020 calendar year.
SYNOPSIS:
The Bobcats got off to a solid start and made most of their shots in the first quarter leading the WolfPack by six (16-10) .
Both teams opened things up in the second quarter. The WolfPack had trouble capitalizing and found themselves down by 13 at half time (37-24). Haggerty and
Megan Rouault (3
rd year guard, Vernon, BC) each had eight points.
Emma Piggin (5
th year, guard, Kamloops, BC) had four points and five rebounds.
Proulx had nine points, three rebounds and a block in the first half for Brandon. Starchuk also had nine in the first two quarters while Teece had six points, three rebounds and two blocks.
The third quarter saw both teams try and out gun each other. The Bobcats outscoring the WolfPack 20-14
The fourth quarter was more of the same as Brandon outscored Thompson Rivers 26-12. The Bobcats out rebounded the Pack 44-32 including 31-15 on the defensive glass.
NEXT UP: The WolfPack and the Bobcats will conclude their weekend series with a game tomorrow (Saturday, Jan 18
th). Tip off will be 5 pm CDT.
The road trip continues for Thompson Rivers the following weekend (Jan 24-25) when they will go from the eastern most part of Canada West to the most western destination: Victoria. The Pack will take on the U Vic Vikes in two games.
They will then return home for their final two contests of the regular season at the Tournament Capital Centre. The WolfPack will entertain the University of Fraser Valley Heat on January 31
st and February 1
st. That is "Alumni Weekend" and will feature "Donors" being honored on the Friday evening.
