KAMLOOPS – A pair of teams side-by-side in the standings were unable to separate themselves on the field, as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team and the UNBC Timberwolves played to a scoreless draw in Prince George.
The WolfPack out-chanced the host Timberwolves on the day, but were unable to find a way past goalkeeper Brooke Molby despite firing six shots on net.
"I thought we were really good today," said WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington. "The players showed some huge progress in the things we've been working on during training. We moved the ball well and to be honest I thought we dominated a majority of the game and just lacked a little finish around the goal."
Marissa Young made eight saves in the WolfPack net to pick up her second shutout of the season. The third-year goalkeeper from Calgary was sturdy at the back all contest long.
Captain
Camryn Curts provided much of the offensive threat for the 'Pack. The fourth year from Courtenay racked up four shots in the game with two of those forcing Molby to make a save.
"Her work-rate and fight were great," said Pennington of Curts. "I thought she did some really good things, she definitely was a threat all day and she created a couple of decent chances that unfortunately she wasn't able to bury. Hopefully tomorrow she has her finishing boots on and keeps the same work-rate that she had today."
Curts had the first real scoring chance of the game in the 10th minute of play. A beautiful long ball from the WolfPack midfield was played into space and a hard-charging Curts almost got to it before Molby intervened.
Just before halftime Curts nearly conjured up the opener. The midfielder took a pass in from
Caylah Lemon and spun around one defender before juking another, but her left-footed effort was swallowed up by the UNBC goalkeeper.
The second half saw the WolfPack continue to press for a winning goal that just wouldn't come on the day. On the other side of the pitch a combination of Young and a stellar WolfPack backline took care of any UNBC counter-attacking chances.
These two teams will meet tomorrow in Prince George in a game scheduled to go at Noon. It will be the final contest of the 2021 season for both squads and for a young WolfPack team, it will be a chance to end their schedule on a high with their first win of the year.
"I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel," said Pennington. "We are going to continue to do the things that we were good at today. UNBC will come out with some different plans and throw some things at us. There were some of our players that didn't see the field today that are waiting for their opportunity and hopefully they'll get that tomorrow to give a good account of themselves and stake a claim on a starting place building into next year."
