KAMLOOPS - Scoring chances were at a premium Friday night, as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team and the Fraser Valley Cascades played to a 1-1 draw inside Hillside Stadium.
Taylor Richardson for the Cascades and
Dylan Hooper for the WolfPack provided the goals on the night, while Jackson Cowx made four saves for Fraser Valley and
Jackson Gardner made one for the 'Pack.
"It wasn't pretty, it definitely was a battle and it's always a battle when we play Fraser Valley," said WolfPack head coach
John Antulov. "We started to get some opportunities, some chances and we have to be a little more clinical when we get those opportunities because it gets a little scary when it's 0-0 near the end of the game."
The tie, alongside a loss from Trinity Western, was enough to send the 'Pack into sole possession of first place in the West Division with a record of 3-1-5 on the season. With 14 points and just three games left to play, this marks the latest point in the season that the WolfPack have led their division since joining Canada West in 2014. Fraser Valley meanwhile moves to 1-3-3 on the season.
A defensive stalemate for most of the night, the three best scoring chances of the game all came in a row.
Dylan Hooper, who finished the night with three shots on goal, nearly scored in the 73rd minute but his shot after a great individual effort clanged off the crossbar.
The visitors scored against the run of play just minutes later. A long throw in from Mikael Mainella was flicked on by Sahib Sidhu into the path of Richardson who fired the ball into the back of the net.
TRU trailed for only three minutes before Hooper found an equalizer.
George La Motte flicked a ball on to a charging Hooper near the middle of the field. Hooper, a winger from Winnipeg, took on his defender and fired a cross into the box that deflected off a Cascades defender and into the net.
"Dylan had a great game tonight, he was really putting their back-line under bother," said Antulov. "He was doing a good job of creating shots and crosses. He was really sharp today so hopefully he can continue that tomorrow."
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow night at Hillside Stadium. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and will serve as Senior Night for
James Fraser of the 'Pack. Tickets are available at gowolfpack.ca and the game can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
