KAMLOOPS – A
Katie Gleddie goal brought the WolfPack level momentarily, but they were unable to hold on for the tie in a 3-1 loss to the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday night.
Harneet Dadrao was the hero for the Cascades. The third-year midfielder scored twice in the second half with Alanna Sydenham tallying the other Fraser Valley goal. For the WolfPack, Gleddie's goal in the 54th minute was the first of her TRU career.
The game was the final home contest of the 2021 season for the WolfPack. With the result they move to 0-8-2, while the Cascades picked up their first wins of the season this weekend and now hold a record of 2-4-2.
Fraser Valley opened the scoring from a set piece. Dadrao whipped in a corner in the 14th minute of play that ended up bouncing around the WolfPack six-yard box, Sydenham was first to the loose ball and poked it in for the game's opening goal.
The WolfPack rebounded well after conceding and carried a majority of the play up until Gleddie's goal.
"From what we asked for, we got a response in terms of fighting," said WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington. "We were just very naïve in defence and handed them too many opportunities."
Goalkeeper
Marissa Young started a counter-attack with a toss out to
Makaela Gelowitz with plenty of room in front of her. Gelowtiz charged down the wing then played a nice combination of passes with
Hollis Roeske before crossing a ball to Gleddie who was there to tap the ball in at the far post.
It was all Fraser Valley after the tying marker.
Dadrao scored her first of the night in the 70th minute after a nice give-and-go passing play with Simi Lehal.
The Cascades then added an insurance marker with seven minutes left to play. Dadrao took a pass from Jiya Kaila and unleashed a rocket of a shot into the top corner of the net.
The WolfPack will have ample time to bounce back from the loss. They are on their bye week next week before heading up to Prince George to finish their season with a pair of games against the UNBC Timberwolves. Fraser Valley meanwhile, will play the final home games of their 2021 campaign when they welcome those very same Timberwolves to Abbotsford next weekend.
"We've got to dust ourselves, get ourselves ready to go and end on a high," said Pennington. "The key for us is that we have to remember this is a process. We have to remember where this program has come from and where we are trying to go and it's not going to happen overnight."
