Timberwolves topple WolfPack thanks to big final frame

KAMLOOPS – In a game that was much closer than the final score would suggest, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball fell 68-51 to the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday night.

The first of two games between these teams scheduled for this weekend was as close as a two point margin late in the third quarter before the Timberwolves outscored the 'Pack 26-14 over the final ten minutes for the win.

First-year guard Danijela Kovacevic led the way for the WolfPack with 14 points and four steals on the night. Anneke Cairnie finished one rebound short of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds while Jessica Orr rounded out the scoring leaders with 11 points of her own.

Alina Shakirova was again dominant for the Timberwolves, finishing the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds with Rebecca Landry adding a further 13 points.

A five point game heading into the fourth quarter was blown wide open by a Timberwolves squad that shot 76 per cent from the field over the final ten minutes en route to the victory.

The host Timberwolves were able to overcome a WolfPack defence that had been tenacious through the opening three quarters. A young 'Pack squad scored 21 points off the 22 turnovers they forced in the game.

Trailing by seven points after the opening frame, a 7-2 WolfPack run at the end of the first half capped off by a Maggie Fehr jumper sent the teams into the halftime break with the score 27-22. A three-pointer from Orr with just over two minutes to go in the third quarter cut the lead to 39-37, but that was as close as the WolfPack would come before the Timberwolves ran away with the game late.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow in Prince George with a scheduled tip-off of 4:00 p.m. That action can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
