KAMLOOPS – Another night, another five set match for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team but this time they were unable to find themselves on the winning side as the Brandon Bobcats won by a score of 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13
"You know what, it's very similar to last night. I think we hit a bit of a lull in the second set, but I'm proud of the guys' effort. I mean, five setter, going all the way to 10:45pm last night to turn it around in an earlier game and come out and give a full effort was great," said WolfPack head coach
Pat Hennelly. "You know, I said this in the team room: you don't have to hang your heads, we won by two points last night and we lost by two points tonight. So, the battle we expected and we're happy with the result on the weekend."
Tom Friesen was a threat for the Bobcats all night. He finished with 16 kills and only 3 errors leading to a 0.342 hitting percentage. Philip Lauter and Rylan Metcalf both tallied 8 kills respectively.
For the second night in a row,
Sam Flowerday led the way for the WolfPack offence. The second year from Prosperpine, Australia finished the night with with 18 kills and 2 service aces.
"Flowerday's our guy right now," said Hennelly. "Every once in a while, he'll make a mistake being intense and going after it; but that's what you want from you leader. He's not afraid to take the big swings."
Thundersky Walkingbear also contributed on both sides of the ball, finishing the night with 13 kills, 2 service aces and 7 digs.
The WolfPack came out in the first set with high intensity, winning the set with evenly distributed offence. Walkingbear and Flowerday contributed with three kills each and
Rylan Ibbetson and
Michael Svab added two in each.
The Bobcats came to life in the second set, holding a consistent lead of 3 points. That is, until
Corbin Ockerman started a point run for the WolfPack. Clawing their way back, the WolfPack earned themselves a 22-21 lead. However, both service and attack errors led to the Bobcats taking the set 27-25.
On a roll, the Bobcats got out to an early 4-1 lead in the third set and never looked back. Led by Lauter who finished the set with three kills and one ace, the Bobcats took the frame 25-21.
At one point in the fourth set, the WolfPack found themselves down four points (11-15) but showed good fight to eat away at the Bobcats lead. A crucial Flowerday kill tied the set up at 19-19 and the WolfPack started rolling from there, finishing the set off 25-22 thanks to five kills from Walkingbear.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair, before a strong serving effort powered the Bobcats to victory. Friesen, Lauter and Nigel Tolley all recorded service aces with Tolley's clutch serve putting the game away at 15-13.
TRU will head out on the road next weekend when they travel to Winnipeg next weekend for a pair of games against the Manitoba Bisons.
Brandon meanwhile will look to use this momentum as they return home to host the UBC Thunderbirds.
