KAMLOOPS – A massive second quarter and clutch performances late led the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team to a 78-74 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
TRU earned their first win of the Canada West season thanks in large part to a 25-14 edge in the second frame before clutching up late.
After
Daniel Bost tied the game at 66-66 with four minutes left to go, the 'Pack went on an 11-3 run over the next three minutes, punctuated by a
Simon Crossfield three-pointer, to snag a 77-69 advantage. From there, the defence held steady as the 'Pack were able to run out the clock for the four-point victory.
Ukranian product
Denys Bachurin led the way for TRU, finishing with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for his second straight double-double performance. Rookie
Cyrus Harrison stayed hot, playing 37 minutes and adding 16 points and six boards. Bost rounded out the top scorers for TRU, hitting on four of his nine long distance attempts to finish with 15 points.
Kymani Pollard had 17 points for Lethbridge and Jeff Rodehutkors 14 as the Pronghorns struggled from beyond-the-arc, knocking down just eight of their 31 attempts.
After getting into a six-point hole early, TRU dominated the second quarter. The 'Pack started the frame on a 14-2 run powered by buckets from five different players and limited the Pronghorns to shooting just 33 per cent as a team as TRU pulled out to a 43-38 lead at the half.
After the teams traded points in a low-scoring third quarter the stage was set for the WolfPack's run in the fourth that led them to victory.
TRU (1-5) will return to Kamloops next weekend where they will finish their first semester schedule with a pair of games against the MacEwan Griffins inside the TCC.
