WolfPack fall to Wesmen in season-opener

KAMLOOPS – It was a tough start to the season for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team that fell 85-49 to the Winnipeg Wesmen on the road.

"Despite the outcome we did take some steps forward tonight against a very good Wesmen team," said WolfPack head coach Todd Warnick. "Our third quarter defensively was stronger and we did a good job taking away key options."

Taking on the reigning U SPORTS silver medallist Wesmen, TRU put together a balanced scoring effort with Danijela Kovacevic leading the way with 12 points. Megan Rouault had nine points, Kelsey Cruz eight and Jessica Orr six as 10 different members of the 'Pack scored in the contest.

The Wesmen outshot the 'Pack 42.2 – 28.6 per cent in the game as a veteran Winnipeg squad was able to limit the 'Packs offensive output.

"We struggled shooting the ball tonight which had a lot to do with the strong Winnipeg defence as much as our youth and inexperience effecting our timing," said Warnick.

TRU's best efforts came in a third quarter where they scored 14 points and limited Winnipeg to 18 before the hosts pulled away for good in the fourth frame.

"Good things to build off of going forward and we know now what the level is at the very pinnacle of what U SPORTS and Canada West has to offer," said Warnick.

These teams will be back in action tomorrow night in Winnipeg and that game can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
