Kamloops – A back-and-forth affair finished how it started between the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team and the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night, with the teams playing to a 2-2 stalemate.
Emily Clark scored her second in as many nights for TRU with
Bridget Baird tallying her first-ever Canada West goal. Jade Houmphanh and Cheyenne Lehmann answered for the Huskies with Lehmann scoring the first of her university career.
With the win the WolfPack move to 1-2-1 on the year as they round out their weekend with the tie after defeating Regina 3-2 yesterday. The Huskies meanwhile now sit at 2-1-2 and will be taking four points back to the Prairies from their road trip to B.C. with tonight's tie following a victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat yesterday.
TRU took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to another hard-working goal from the Kamloops product.
Caylah Lemon whipped in a dangerous free kick that
Camryn Curts was able to nod up into the air before Clark powered it into the back of the net.
Taisa Garbuch had a great chance off a set piece just minutes later but
Marissa Young was up to the task to make the save and send the teams into the halftime break with the score 1-0.
Houmphanh started to shine for Saskatchewan in the the second half. The third-year midfielder played in multiple dangerous crosses before finally creating the first Huskie goal in the 67th minute. Houmphanh let go a blistering shot that bounced off Young's hands and into the path of Lehman who made no mistake to bury the ball into the back of the net.
Saskatchewan took the lead in the 75th minute.
A great individual run by Houmphanh was ended by a TRU defender hauling her down in the box. The midfielder was awarded for her efforts by stepping up to the penalty spot and scorching the ball into the back of the net.
The WolfPack refused to go away with no points from the contest though and the rookie Baird played the hero with just seven minutes left in the contest.
A ball into the box bounced off players from both teams before Baird was perfectly in place to put the ball into the back of the net and tie the game back up for good.
"After conceding they showed character again and I think that's a real testament to the group and how hard they work for each other," said WolfPack head coach
Mark Pennington. "I'm disappointed we put ourselves into the position to have to get back into it, but these things happen. I'm really proud of an unbeaten weekend, we will take the four points and move onto next weekend."
The Huskies will return home next weekend to host the Trinity Western Spartans and Fraser Valley Cascades in Saskatoon.
For the WolfPack it's a trip out on the road to Alberta where they will face the Mount Royal Cougars and Lethbridge Pronghorns.
"Saskatchewan is a good team, Jerson is a good coach and he has them well-organized and they are always a tough opponent, I have a lot of respect for them," said Pennington. "We are a young group so Bridget getting her first U SPORTS goal was massive.
Alexis Virgo getting another 90 minutes under her belt and Anika getting good minutes was great. It's a learning process for everyone and I couldn't be happier with how hard we worked."
